BIO_SOS - GA Coordinator: Palma Blonda (It) Most RTD man months (WP4, WP5, WP6) focusing on Task 3.ST Work plan SBA Biodiversity Session 1, Splinter 1a MS.MONINA – GA Coordinator: Stefan Lang (At) Most RTD man months focusing on Task 1.AD and 4.UI GEO Strategic Targets: 1.Architecture and Data Management (AD) 2.Capacity Building (CBD) 3.Science and Technology (ST) 4.User Interface (UI) Area (Pre-operational validation of GMES services and products) SPA (Stimulating the development of GMES services in specific areas). Three years projects University of Salzburg (PLUS)

Work plan SBA Biodiversity Session 1, Splinter 1a MS.MONINA – GA Supporting the GEO Biodiversity strategic targets  State and change monitoring of sensitive habitats of ‘community interest’  link to SBA ecosystems  Harmonizing the various approaches of data collection, data integration, information provision and service  Conditioning of geospatial information for EO-based support of monitoring, management and reporting tasks  Advanced knowledge-based classification systems for integrated (and interdisciplinary?) image analysis systems  Dedicated translation of user needs into technical developments and building on existing user / providers networks  Capacity building and training to utilize new technologies  Nagoya Biodiversity Summit COP 10 : installation of IPCC-like IPBES (Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services)  challenge: what are the ‘essential biodiversity variables’?  Protecting habitats in sufficient quality for biodiversity conservation  European NATURA 2000 concept (Habitat Directive)  link with SBA Ecosystems

Work plan SBA Biodiversity Session 1, Splinter 1a BIO_SOS - GA AD.1.a) An appropriate coordinated programme of calibration and validation (Cal/Val) activities throughout all stages of a spaceborne mission, from sensor build to end-of- life to allow multi-sensor time series analysis according to Quality Assurance Framework for Earth Observation data (QA4EO) AD.1.b) Standardization of in-situ data collection useful for the monitoring of processes occurring at different spatial scale by EO data and techniques. AD.1.c) Link to SBA agriculture for Agro-ecosystem biodiversity monitoring and food security (as for developing Country: Africa). The monitoring system can be considered as a multi-Task transversal contribution to GEOSS. CB.2.a) Training of Users (civil society) on Biodiversity related Services ST.3.a) Automatic deductive (prior-knowledge based) patter recognition techniques development for the monitoring of habitat at local and regional scales. ST.3.b) New ecological modelling based on multi-disciplinary expertise: Soil-vegetation interaction modelling for Biodiversity conservation status evaluation ST.3.c) New modelling based on socio-economic sciences for the definition of Natura 2000 boundary areas where different policy are to be implemented by decision maker.
