Transition from A Level to undergraduate language study: resources to support your students Routes into Languages Dissemination Event Angela Morris Schools Liaison Officer Aston University

What are the Transition Resources? Online materials to support students in the transition from A Level to Undergraduate language study Designed for independent study use by A Level and undergraduate students, or to support language teaching in school and college Focus on developing 6 areas of key skills essential for successful language study

Why is there a need for Transition Resources? High expectations of students from university language staff as they embark on undergraduate language programmes Increasing student expectations of the ‘service’ provided by universities Importance of maintaining a supportive study environment for undergraduate students to ensure low risk of non-completion of degree programmes Noticeable skills gap in crucial areas for language study

How were the areas of key skills identified? Dialogue with teaching staff from Aston University’s School of Languages and Social Sciences to identify skills required across all three languages Discussions with undergraduate language students in all years of study to ascertain where they would have liked additional support in their studies Collaboration with Aston University’s Learning Development Centre

Which key skills do the resources focus on? Dictionary Skills Research Skills Reading Skills Note Taking Academic Writing Referencing

How should students use the resources? Each resource consists of an English Powerpoint presentation which explains the basics of the specific skill There are also MP4 files which include screenshots from the Powerpoints with voiceover recordings from current undergraduate students, these are broken down into short clips, a few minutes long Each resource has an accompanying set of language specific activities, also in Powerpoint, in French, Spanish and German

How should students use the resources? The resources are designed in such a way that students can choose to work through the Powerpoints sequentially, completing the activities as they go along, or they can pick out a particular skill and focus solely on that The bite-size recordings aim to enable students to easily fit the use of resources into their current studies and revision without becoming overwhelmed, confused or bored MFL Teachers may also choose to use the Powerpoints in class with their AS and A2 students

Where can I download these resources? On the Routes into Languages website in the ‘West Midlands’ section under ‘Resources’ Also available on Languages Box We will be making them available to all Aston offer holders for MFL Degree programmes Please do send any feedback from yourselves or your students to us at
