Presentation transcript:

Writing Prompt My grandfather became a high school science teacher when he was 19 years old. Later he was a biology professor at Lock Haven University and the science department head. He once told me that he thought we should make children go to school until about 4th grade and then if they want to quit and get a job, they could. He also said that they should be allowed to return to school if they wanted.

Journal Entry Why do you think he would say such a thing? What are your personal thoughts on why we force students to go to school until at least age 16? Do you want to go to college? Why or why not. Do you need college to be “successful”?

Setting Goals Goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement. - Brian Tracy, Eat that Frog

Types of Goals Short-Term: Things you want to accomplish in the next few days, weeks or months Should be measurable Long-Term: Things you want to accomplish over the next year, decade or your lifetime Short-term goals are stepping stones to long term goals.

Examples of Goals Long-term: Become a better leader. Short-term: Take a leadership class this fall and earn an “A”. Read, “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” by the end of September.

Listing Your Goals One long-term goal (next year or two) One short-term goal that will help achieve your long-term goal. One academic goal for this semester (end of January). One personal goal for this semester. One goal for this class.
