3 Focus on your goals There was an interesting motivational talk on this subject given by former Dallas Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson to his football players: " I told them that if I laid a two-by four plank across the room, everybody there would walk across it and not fall, because our focus would be that we were going to walk that two-by-four. But if I put that same two-by-four plank 10 stories high between two buildings only a few would make it, because the focus would be on failing. Focus is everything. The team that is more focused today is the team that will win this game." Cowboys won 52-17 win over Buffalo in Super Bowl XXVII (1993) ©2012 National Endowment for Financial Education | Lesson 1-2: Goals2

8 Is the Goal Specific? page 15 What exactly needs to be accomplished? Who else will be in involved? Where will this take place? Why do I want to accomplish this goal? Mike needs to replace all four tires on his car because the treads are worn out. ©2012 National Endowment for Financial Education | Lesson 1-2: Goals7

9 Is the Goal Measurable ? How will I know I have succeeded? How much change needs to occur? How many actions will it take? Mike needs to have tires on his car with treads that provide good traction when driving in snow and rain conditions. 1. Find out how much new tires will cost. 2. Save the money to buy tires. 3. Schedule an appointment to replace tires. ©2012 National Endowment for Financial Education | Lesson 1-2: Goals8

10 Is the Goal Attainable? Do I have, or can I get, the resources needed to achieve the goal? Is the goal a reasonable stretch for me? (neither out of reach nor too easy) Are the actions I plan to take likely to bring success? Mike has money saved and is also working, so he can pay for the new tires. He also can compare prices at three businesses near his house. ©2012 National Endowment for Financial Education | Lesson 1-2: Goals9

11 Is the Goal Relevant? Is this a worthwhile goal for me right now? Is it meaningful to me? Will it delay or prevent me from achieving a more important goal? Am I willing to commit to achieving this goal? Mike wants to replace his current, worn-out tires for new tires. This will improve fuel efficiency and reduce the risk of having a flat tire at an inconvenient time. ©2012 National Endowment for Financial Education | Lesson 1-2: Goals10

12 Is the Goal Time-Bound? What is the deadline for reaching the goal? When do I need to take action? What can I do today? Mike needs to replace his tires by the end of next month. By the end of this week, he will request three quotes to compare tire prices. ©2012 National Endowment for Financial Education | Lesson 1-2: Goals11

17 Italian Parable High on a hilltop overlooking the beautiful city of Venice, Italy, there lived an old man who was a genius. Legend had it he could answer any question anyone might ask of him. Two of the local boys figured they could fool the old man, so they caught a small bird and headed for his residence. One of the boys held the little bird in his hands and asked the old man if the bird was dead or alive. Without hesitation the old man said, " Son, if I say to you that the bird is alive, you will close your hands and crush him to death. If I say the bird is dead, you will open your hands and he will fly away. You see, son, in your hands you hold the power of life and death." ©2012 National Endowment for Financial Education | Lesson 1-2: Goals16
