Chemistry Terms Chemical Reactions Involving Atoms Molecules & Compounds

What is an atom

It is the smallest basic unit of matter

It is a particular type of atom. Like oxygen (O) or carbon (C).

What is an element?

It is an atom that has lost or gained electrons and has either a positive or negative charge.

What is an ion

Two or more different types of elements bonded together in certain ratios. An example includes H 2 O

What is a compound?

They are atoms bonded together by covalent bonds.

What are molecules

A process where new substances are formed when bonds are made or broken.

What is a chemical reaction?

They are found on the left side of a chemical reaction. Example: left side  right side H 2 + O  H 2 O

What are reactants?

DAILY DOUBLE

These are found on the right side of a chemical equation. Example: left side  right side H 2 + O  H 2 O

What are products?

It is a chemical reaction that gives off heat/energy.

What is an exothermic reaction?

These have the same number of protons and electrons.

What are atoms?

These do not have the same number of protons and electrons.

What are ions?

An atom that has one proton and one electron is an atom of this element.

What is hydrogen?

It is an atom that has 11 protons and 11 electrons.

What is sodium?

The electrons found here are the electrons that are involved in bonding.

What are the electrons found in the outer energy level?

The image above is made of these 2 atoms.

What are hydrogen?

It is this type of bond that forms between water molecules that allows you to put many drops of water on a penny.

What is a hydrogen bond?

These cabon based molecules are used mainly for storing energy.

What are lipids?

These carbon based molecules provide you with the energy your body needs.

What are carbohydrates?

These carbon based molecules store genetic information.

What are nucleic acids?

It is the type of bond formed above & this is the charge magnesium forms.

What is an ionic bond? What is a positive charge?
