19-Nov-08John Walz1 Vice President for Standards Activities Report to IEEE CS BOG John Walz November 2008

19-Nov-08John Walz2 SAB focusing two broad areas Improving the Standards Committee (SC) and Work Group vitality and Increasing value of standards and their associated products to the Computer Society membership, who are mainly industry participants

19-Nov-08John Walz3 SAB planned discussions IEEE Councils coordinate the standards work of the Society’s Standards Committees (SC), IEEE-SA Standards Coordinating Committee aligned closer to Society’s Technical Committees, IEEE-SA Corporate Advisory Group structure aligned closer to Society’s Standards Committees, CS Constitution Fields of Interest to include Standards Activities, T & C Technical Committees need to increase communications and guidance with their relevant SC SAB P&P updated to recommend to the CS President to appoint the CS liaison to Federation for Learning, Education and Training Systems Interoperability (LETSI) Acting Board

19-Nov-08John Walz4 My advice to SAB for 2009 SC reach out to other SC for joint project sponsorship in order to attract the best experts for converging technologies TC review & guidance is needed to qualify requests for new standards development SC move into CS new Web Portal to improve communications, vitality, & membership of GOLD volunteers Use CS Strategic Planning to jump start Game Technology standards with cross Board supports A wide range of vitality exists across the 43 Societies SC -> puts IEEE-TAB at disadvantage to IEEE-SA. Share CS best practices w/ Societies

19-Nov-08John Walz5 Renewed focus on Vitality work both the minimum set of criteria & formulate the areas of excellence –Connections with other CS Boards. –Focus on recognition of our CS volunteers –Expansion of our business base

19-Nov-08John Walz6 Interoperability Support the CS Transformation Plan –emphasis on interoperability with other CS Boards. CS Boards access to industry experts and their channels for ancillary standards products such as podcasts, webinars, tutorials, workshops, & books. Reach out to local regional chapters to present standards related seminars. Use History Committee to recognize Standards leaders of the past though publicity on website

19-Nov-08John Walz7 External Standards Organizations Improve relationships with other SDO Upgrade current ISO, IEC, and JTC1 relationships to the new ISO/IEC "partner standards development organization (PSDO)" Optimize stakeholder resources & shorten time-to- market by both joint development of standards and adopting each other's standards Harmonize our software and system engineering standards with ISO JTC1/SC7. Align new & existing standards with Body of Knowledge, and Certification programs

19-Nov-08John Walz8 Working with IEEE-SA on multiple channel sales, funding and pricing models, liberal standards license rights, low cost virtual WG meetings, appreciation for volunteers, balance between individual and corporate processes, and involvement of companies using standards for their products. Participation on the IEEE SA Standards Board is to promote the SAB and the CS interests.
