Office of Health Information Technology (OHIT) Mission: The Office of Health Information Technology (OHIT) promotes the adoption and effective use of health information technology (HIT) in the safety net community. OHIT Includes: –Division of Health Information Technology Policy –Division of Health Information Technology State and Community Assistance –Office for the Advancement of Telehealth

OHIT Goals Bring HIT to America’s safety net providers which will –Improve quality of care –Reduce health disparities –Increase efficiency in care delivery systems –Increase patient safety –Decrease medical errors –Eliminate the digital divide

HIT is….. Health Information Technology is the use of information and communication technology in health care. Health Information Technology can include: -electronic health or medical records -personal health records - communication -clinical alerts and reminders -computerized decision support systems -hand-held devices -other technologies that store, protect, retrieve and transfer clinical, administrative, and financial information electronically within health care settings. -HHS/HRSA/Health Information Technology

Developed by Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) A Compilation of planning, implementation and evaluation resources Helps community health centers (CHCs), other safety net and ambulatory providers implement health IT applications Organized to support needs of stakeholders ranging from senior management to the staff implementing health information systems Provides information regarding implementing applications such as disease registries, electronic health records, etc. Various stakeholders in the health IT arena have reviewed and contributed to the toolbox to ensure accurate, relevant, and effective in supporting health IT in health centers Toolbox made publicly available in November 2008 and can be accessed at: Introduction to the Health IT Adoption Toolbox

The toolbox is organized into the following eleven modules: Introduction to Health IT Getting Started Opportunities for Collaboration Project Management and Oversight Planning for Technology Implementation Organizational Change Management and Training System Implementation Evaluating, Optimizing, and Sustaining Advanced Topics Open Source and Public Domain Software Privacy and Security Cover the life cycle of a typical health IT implementation project, from learning the basics to evaluating and optimizing a system Each module contains various resources including sample project documentation and white papers Question-and-answer framework is designed to help users find the information they need at various phases of a health IT implementation project Topic-specific Modules

HITTAC – One to One TA Consultation with HRSA OHIT Staff Peer-to-peer technical assistance to obtain TA from an experienced peer in HIT. Consultant technical assistance to obtain TA from an experienced consultant in HIT.

HITTAC One to One TA Consultation with OHIT Staff OHIT encourages HRSA grantees and staff to call or with any HIT questions. –Can you help me identify grantees using the same software that I am using or looking to implement? –My grantee has a question on HIT I cannot answer-- can you assist us?

HITTAC – Peer to Peer and Consultant TA Peer to Peer Technical Assistance – obtaining TA from an experienced Peer in HIT. Consultant Technical Assistance – obtaining TA from an experienced consultant in HIT.

HITTAC – TA Request One to Many Resources TA Request Received from Grantee PO/OPR makes recommendation OHIT schedules Triage call and involves the PO One to Many Resources is identified as the TA Need and grantee is directed to those resources OHIT follows up to be sure the grantee received the TA requested and obtains evaluations.

24 HIT Workshops OHIT partners with Health Center Controlled Networks and other HRSA grantees who have implemented HIT to provide Regional workshops around the country to foster learning and network development among HRSA grantees who have not implemented HIT

25 HIT Workshops 2009  In 2009 OHIT provided at least 17 regional workshops:  EHR implementation  HIE  Open source EHR solutions  EHR that focuses on child health and pediatric EHR functionality  E-prescribing or tele-pharmacy  “Meaningful use” of EHRs to improve quality and patient outcomes  Sustainability, personal health records, and other advanced topics for operational networks  Critical Access Hospitals and other Rural HIT  Telehealth for rural and urban communities and health centers
