WHAT IS AN ACTIVE LEARNER? Task Passive Learners Active Learners Class Lectures Try to write everything that the professor says Decide what is important and then write it out in own words Textbook Readings Read (all you do is move your eyeballs from line to line down the page) then get bored or fall asleep, forget what you read by the time you get to the end of the paragraph or page Read, think, underline key concepts, question, try to link ideas, create a structure for the topic, map out the structure, summarize in own words or in table form (for more information on active reading, refer to the handout) Studying Reread notes, texts and handouts Organize study materials and topics / themes; make outlines, graphs, charts, diagrams; search for patterns or trends; figure out possible exam questions; look for comparisons or contrasts

Task Passive Learners Active Learners Written class assignments Follow the instructions Discover the purpose and significance of the assignment, identify the concepts and principles associated with the assignment Term papers Do only what is required Try to gain knowledge and make connections to course content and objectives Learn material Memorize by rote is primary strategy, may give up easily when work becomes very difficult, interested only in grades Use meaningful memory skills as well as rote, are interested in the challenge of learning, do not give up easily, believe they can get smarter by working hard
