The Past Tense Part Three!

The past Tense with Sein As with haben the past participle (ge word) goes to the end of the sentence. You also need a bit of the verb sein (e.g. Ich bin). Verbs with sein usually involve movement.

The parts of sein: ich bin - I am du bist – you are er/sie/es ist - he she it is wir sind – we are sie sind – they are It is important to take care not to try to translate the parts of sein within a past tense sentence as it will not make sense!

Es sieht so aus... He went by car. Er ist mit dem Auto gefahren.

Some useful verbs with sein: gegangen gefahren geflogen geblieben geschwommen gekommen gefallen aufgestanden went (on foot) went (on transport) flew stayed swam came fell got up

Wie sagt man ? I went to town by taxi. Last year I flew to Spain. Last week he got up late. We went to the cinema by bus. They stayed in a hotel. Last Saturday she fell in town. She swam in the sea.

Und das? They went to the beach. Sie sind zum Strand gegangen.

Translate the following. Ich bin Rad gefahren. Er ist nach Italien gefahren. Sie sind zu Hause geblieben. Ich binBritish Airwaysgeflogen. Wir sind am Montag gekommen. I went by bike. He went to Italy. They stayed at home. I flew British Airways. We came on Monday.

A final word. All you need to do is take care to check whether the verb goes with haben or sein in the past tense. This can be done by looking in your GCSE Revision book or a dictionary.
