Disappearing Bees

Importance of Bees Bees are vital to the success of our ecosystem and the disappearance of bees will adversely affect our way of life.

What’s so great about bees?  Bees are the world’s primary pollinators.  We depend on bees for survival.

Pollinators  The average bee can visit around 5000 flowers a day.  A beehive contains between and worker bees.  Worldwide agriculture depends on bees to help produce around $260 billion worth of food. (Princeton Architectural Press, 2010)

Bee products create everything from cosmetics to medicine.  Honey  Beeswax  Royal Jelly  Propolis  Mead  Bee Bread

The Disappearing Bee

Colony Collapse Disorder  The cause of CCD is unknown  Affects the bee’s ability to navigate.  Is believed to be the cause of between 50% and 90% of bee colonies losses in the US.

Effects of CCD  Lower food production.  Rise in food prices.  Rise in cost of bee products.

Theories and Probable Causes

Most Probable Causes Pesticides  Living bacterium Pathogens  Neonicotinoid pesticides  Aka “Poncho”

Theories  Malnutrition  Genetically modified crops  Migratory Beekeeping

Other possible causes  Urbanization  Air pollution  Predators such as hornets and wasps  Severe weather  Human extermination

Ways to help  Do not exterminate healthy bee colonies!  Plant bee attracting flowers and bushes.  Donate to bee conservation efforts.  Buy bee products.  Raise awareness.

Who to call  Local Beekeepers  Live Bee Removal services  In emergency cases the Fire department

Local Services  Adkins Bee Removal Services   Utah Bee Removal   List of local beekeepers  beekeepers.html
