2. Honeybees are fascinating and useful insects.

3. Honeybee hives have long provided humans with honey and beeswax.

4. Such commercial uses have spawned a large beekeeping industry.

5. Though many species still occur in the wild.

6. All honeybees are social and cooperative insects.

7. A hive's inhabitants are generally divided into three types.

8. Workers are the only bees that most people ever see.

9. These bees are female.

10. Workers forage for food: pollen and nectar from flowers.

11. Workers also build and protect the hive, clean, circulate air by beating their wings, and perform many other functions.

12. The queen's job is simple—laying the eggs that will spawn the hive's next generation of bees.

13. There is usually only a single queen in a hive.

14. If the queen dies, workers will create a new queen by feeding one of the worker females a special diet of a food called "royal jelly."

15. This elixir enables the worker to develop into a fertile queen.

16. Queens also regulate the hive's activities by producing chemicals that guide the behavior of the other bees.

17. Male bees are called drones—the third class of honeybee.

18. Several hundred drones live in each hive during the spring and summer, but they are expelled for the winter months when the hive goes into a lean survival mode.

19. Bees live on stored honey and pollen all winter, and cluster into a ball to conserve warmth.

20. Larvae are fed from the stores during this season and, by spring, the hive is swarming with a new generation of bees.

21. Honey bees are hardworking.

22. In a single day, a single hive can pollinate four million flowers.

23. Pollination is needed for plants to produce fruit.

24. Honeybees pollinate nearly one- third of all the food we eat.

25. But scientists are confused by an international bee crises.

26. Bees are disappearing from their colonies in record numbers.

27. Scientists have labeled this disappearing act “Colony Collapse Disorder.”

28. The exact causes for “Colony Collapse Disorder” are unknown.

29. It is thought that forces like habitat destruction,

30. misuse of pesticides,

31. invasive species (the Israeli acute paralysis virus),

32. and global warming,

33. create risks to honey bees.
