4.4 Measures of Central Tendency Le sson Essential Question: How can I use statistics to describe a particular set of data? Objectives ~ Find the mean, median, mode, and range of a data set. ~ Represent data with frequency tables. Bel lringer So lve the following equation for x. 3(x - 2) = 24

MEAN: The mean of a data set is the quotient when the sum of all the elements are divided by the total number of elements. Data Set: 3, 5, 8, 5, 8, 7, 16, 10, 2, 7, 1, 5, 6, 1 Step 1: Add all of the numbers in the data set together. Step 2: How many numbers are in the data set? Step 3: Divide the total number by the number of elements.

Median: The median of a data set is the middle number in the set when the elements are placed in numerical order. If there are an even number of elements, the median is the average of the two middle numbers. Data Set: 3, 5, 8, 5, 8, 7, 16, 10, 2, 7, 1, 5, 6, 1 Step 1: Arrange the numbers from least to greatest Step 2: Is there an even or odd amount of elements Step 3: If there is an odd amount; circle the middle number (DONE) Step 4: If there is an even amount; circle the two middle numbers and divide by two (DONE)

Mode: The mode of a data set is the element, if any, that occurs most often, There may be no mode, one mode, or several modes. Data Set: 3, 5, 8, 5, 8, 7, 16, 10, 2, 7, 1, 5, 6, 1 Step 1: Look through the elements and find the number that occurs most often Step 2: Check to see if there is more than one element that occurs the same amount of times

Range: The range of a data set is the difference between the greatest and least values in the set. Data Set: 3, 5, 8, 5, 8, 7, 16, 10, 2, 7, 1, 5, 6, 1 Step 1: Find the greatest and least values in the set. Step 2: Find the difference between the greatest and least value.

4.4 Additional Practice (# 1 - 2) Exit Ticket (#5) Ho mework ~ Find the mean, median, mode and range of the following data set 160, 100, 150, 125, 125, 150, 114
