Biostatistics, statistical software II. A brief survey of statistical program systems Krisztina Boda PhD Department of Medical Informatics, University of Szeged
Krisztina Boda INTERREG 2 The need of a statistical computer system Simple statistical calculations can be performed by hand, based on given formulas, significance can be stated using statistical tables. The use of a computer system makes even these simple calculations safer, and it is necessary in case of more complicated problems. There are many statistical systems; the choice of the appropriate statistical software is not easy. Here we give only a brief summary of some such systems.

Krisztina Boda INTERREG 18 R The R programming language, sometimes described as GNU S, is a programming language and software environment for statistical computing and graphics. R is widely used for statistical software development and data analysis, and has become a de-facto standard among statisticians for the development of statistical software. R's source code is freely available under the GNU General Public License. R uses a command line interface, though several graphical user interfaces are available.

Krisztina Boda INTERREG 21 Excel Microsoft Excel (full name Microsoft Office Excel) is a spreadsheet application written and distributed by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS. It features calculation and graphing tools which, along with aggressive marketing, have made Excel one of the most popular microcomputer applications to date. It is overwhelmingly the dominant spreadsheet application available for these platforms. Although it is not a statistical package, it contains tools for the most frequently used simple statistical calculations.
