1 Using SPSS Note: The use of another statistical package such as Minitab is similar to using SPSS

2 After starting the SSPS program the following dialogue box appears:

3 If you select Opening an another file and press OK the following dialogue box appears

4 You then select The Type of file

5 Browse for the name of the file

6 The following dialogue box appears:

7 If the variable names are in the file ask it to read the names
If the variable names are in the file ask it to read the names. If you do not specify the Range the program will identify the Range: Once you “click OK”, two windows will appear

8 One that will contain the output:

9 The other containing the data:

10 To perform any statistical Analysis select the Analyze menu:

11 To calculate descriptive statistics select: Analyze-> Descriptive Statistics-> Descriptives

12 The following dialogue box appears

13 Select the variables;

14 Click the option button to select summary statistics

15 The following dialogue box appears

16 Use this dialogue box to select statistics that you want to compute then press continue:

17 Here is part of the output that appears

18 To Graph data select Graph-> Graph type

19 The following dialogue box appears

20 Select the variable and press OK

21 The following graph appear in the output

22 Using Minitab

23 After starting the Minitab the following window appears:

24 To Open a file go to the menue File-> Open Worksheet

25 The following dialogue box appears: Asking you to find and select the file:

26 You should select the file type and browse for the file that you want to open

27 Here I am opening the Excel file (diet.xls)

28 The data then appears in a Minitab Spreadsheet

29 This data has four Variables: WtGn, Diet, Source, Level

30 Statistical procedures can be found under the Stat menu:

31 Graphical procedures can be found under the Graph menu:
