THE AIM OF THIS PRESENTATION IS: THE AIM OF THIS PRESENTATION IS: to introduce a new way of listening via the Net - podcasts to identify the features of podcasts to highlight the benefits of podcasts for teachers to consider different types of podcasts to present examples of lessons on the basis of podcasts to show how to produce your own podcasts to list some reliable sites 3

WHAT IS A PODCAST? A podcast is a digital audio file that is located on a web server. An RSS feed (Really Simple Syndication) – let a user receive updated files regularly. 4

FEATURES of a PODCAST a structured audio text (has a beginning, middle and end section) follows a common entertainment genre such as a talk show or magazine type programme content is usually scheduled at regular intervals (each day/week) and each episode often follows the same or similar structure to build into a series 5

BENEFITS for TEACHERS huge variety of podcasts updated regularly easily searched online via topics, themes, poems, stories etc. easy to access, easier to store than CDs and cassettes lots of online audio files accompanied by video, pictures often have additional materials for teachers to use in class copyright free for classroom use often free of charge 6

Evaluating Podcasts Does the webpage look professional? How often is the site updated? Is it easy to find the audio file and preview it? Is the sound quality good? Does it play at a proper speed? What level of learners can this podcast be used for? Can you find topics that fit your needs? 8

Lesson plan - One Minute World News Intermediate Level Step 1 - Turn off the sound on your computer. Step 2 - Go to and launch the video ‘ONE- MINUTE WORLD NEWS’. Step 3 - Sts watch the video without the sound and decide how many news stories were included in the report. Step 4 - Once they have finished, they discuss with a partner what they saw and what they already know about the news stories. Step 5 - Now they watch the clip again with sound and see if they were correct about the number of news stories. They also make notes of any factual information included on the stories (names, place, figures etc.) You can pause the video if you need to make them notes. Step 6 - They watch and listen again and then try to expand their notes into a brief summary of each news article. Step 7 - Close the video and go back to the home page to find any text articles related to the video. Use these articles to check the accuracy of facts Sts wrote down.home page 10

Lesson Plan – World News for Schools Pre-intermediate and Upper Preparation - Download and print the script and prepare fill-in-the-gap exercises Step 1 – Pre-listening task - Discuss the latest news in the world, identify some new vocabulary. Step 2 – Listening - go to BBC World News for Schools and click on the link Download to launch the latest news report.BBC World News for Schools Step 3 – In pairs Sts discuss what they listened and what the main pieces of news are. Step 4 – Now they listen to the news again and try to make notes of any factual information included on the stories (names, place, figures etc.). You can pause if you need to help them make notes. Step 5 – Sts listen again and then try to expand their notes into a brief summary of each news article. Step 6 – After listening - Do prepared exercises to check the accuracy of facts they wrote down and vocabulary. Step 7 – Discuss the news 12

Lesson Plan People Watching (Opportunities Intermediate, Lesson 22 ) Preparation Download and print a copy of the images worksheet for each of your students, the scripts and the audio - Procedure -Sts in pairs discuss the first two images. - Sts listen to the description and circle each part of the picture as it is described. - Sts compare their answers with a partner. - They listen again and try to label each part of the image they have circled. - Images are put up on the board and Sts describe different parts. - Sts are given the script from the audio. They underline the parts of the script that refer to the different things in the images. - Then Sts find examples of : Facts - Example - There are lots of pictures on the wall Deductions - Example - she may be about 60 Personal responses - Example - I’d like to pick some of them up … - Sts identify the parts of the sentence which show something is fact, deduction or personal response. - Then each pair are given another set of pictures. They discuss the two pictures in the same way and try to use some of the structures from the example. 16

Homework -The song is about Step 1 Go to the Musicians channel on YouTube at: Step 2 Type in the name of a singer or band you like and click on search. Choose a video clip from this singer/band and watch it. Step 3 Now write about the clip. You can use these starter sentences to help you: a. The mood of the music is… b. The song is about… c. The singer's voice is… d. The singer reminds me of… e. The video makes me think of…. f. What I like about the song is… g. What I like about the video is… h. I don't like…. Remember you can pause the video if you need to make notes. Step 4 – at school Discuss video clips with your partner. 17
