Becoming a Saint Steps to becoming a saint

There is a specific process that must be followed for a person to become a saint. Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II are in the process of becoming saints.

Saints are people who have lived their life on Earth obedient to God’s will. They did not live perfect lives, but they were determined to work towards a holy life at all times. We are called to be saints here on Earth and to live holy lives.

Servant of God A potential saint’s cause is started by a priest and is presented to a bishop. Once the potential saint has been accepted for consideration to sainthood, they are called a Servant of God. Father Vincent Capodanno

Venerable The Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints then determines if the Servant of God has lived a heroic life. Not a hero, but lived a life of holiness. Venerable Catherine McAuley

Blessed When 1 miracle has been established, the Venerable person’s cause is presented to the Pope. The Pope then decides if they will become Blessed. Blessed Junipero Serra

Saint A second miracle is presented to the Pope and if he determines that the evidence is clear and a miracle occurred, then canonization takes place. Saint Damien of Molokai
