Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries What is Scholars Portal?  A cooperative project of the Ontario Council of University Libraries  A shared infrastructure for delivering electronic services to the 20 academic libraries in Ontario  A set of linked information and research services used daily by 380,000 students and researchers in the province

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Our Core Services  E-Journals  A collection of 12.6 million articles from 8,100 scholarly journals  Single search of content from 18 commercial publishers  Full-text includes PDF for all publishers and XML for three publishers

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Our Core Services  E-Journals  RACER / VDX  A shared ILL/DD system for 19 schools  Supports ISO protocol messaging for borrowing and lending  Z39.50 based searching of OPACs for automatic creation of rotas  Used to support intra- library document delivery

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Our Core Services  E-Journals  RACER / VDX  Scholars Portal Search  A local implementation of Proquest’s Illumina platform  A mirror of Proquest content  Locally loaded databases from 8 publishers including ISI, Gale, Wilson, Elsevier  Single search of over 150 million abstracts and full- text records in 130 databases

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Our Core Services  E-Journals  RACER / VDX  Scholars Portal Search  Refworks  A local implementation of the Refworks citation management service  Supports 37 schools across Canada as well as the 20 OCUL schools  Over 180,000 accounts and 100,000 logins per month during peak periods

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Our Core Services  E-Journals  RACER / VDX  Scholars Portal Search  Refworks  SFX / GetIt  OpenURL resolver services for 20 OCUL libraries  A shared instance for managing consortial products  Individual instances for each school

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Our Core Services  E-Journals  RACER / VDX  Scholars Portal Search  Refworks  SFX / GetIt  Verde ERM  Electronic Resource Management tool  A central instance for managing consortial licenses  Synchronized knowledge base with SFX

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries New Initiatives  Ongoing funding for core services is provided through member contributions  New initiatives are funded through an innovation reserve or with government grants and matching funds from OCUL  Two new initiatives have received funding from the province of Ontario in the amount of $1.5 million

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries ODESI  Ontario Data Documentation, Extraction Service and Infrastructure Initiative  StatsCan, Gallup, and public domain data files  Metadata markup based on DDI (Data Documentaiton Initiative)  End-user access via Nesstar data publishing platform

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries E-Books  Implementation of a local delivery platform for electronic books  Content will come from commercial publishers and open access sources such as the Open Content Alliance  Start-up goal 100,000 e-books  Selection of platform is currently in RFP process

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries New E-Journals Repository  Migrating all E-Journals content to a new XML Content Management system based on Mark Logic  Publisher content will be converted to NIH Journal Archiving and Interchange format  Goals: enhanced searching and closer conformance to emerging standards for trusted digital repositories

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries

Access Management  Scholars Portal is active in support of a new Canadian Identity Management Framework (CIMF) based on Shibboleth  Piloted by 14 universities across Canada  Scholars Portal services are seen as key target services  Shibboleth support will be added to all SP services over the next 18 months

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Other Initiatives  End User Panels  Will be based on Drupal Content Management Systems and LimeSurvey  Will allow for user registration, identification of interest areas, periodic surveys  Cross-service usage data  Combine usage information from all services into a single data analysis tool  Enhanced document delivery services, including “post to web”

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Our Goals  Aggregation for Enhanced Access  Secure Archiving  Better Analysis of Use and Value  Integration with Academic Technologies and E-Learning  Forge New Partnerships

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Five Year Report Card  Aggregation for Enhanced Access  Use of all systems has grown steadily  Exceeds most commercial aggregator services in terms of scope of content

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Scholars Portal Search

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Refworks Sessions

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Five Year Report Card  Secure Archiving  Good effort at collecting content  Need to clarify local load agreements to define archiving rights  Need to review repository management practices against emerging standards for trusted digital repositories

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Five Year Report Card  Analysis of Use and Value  Good grasp of use of individual systems but should look at the bigger picture and look at usage across all systems  Need better tools to support this kind of analysis

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Five Year Report Card  Integration with Academic Technologies and E-Learning  Good effort at integrating Scholars Portal services with each other  Needs to focus more on how to integrate content with tools researchers and students are using, including Web 2.0 collaborative environments and courseware

Scholars Portal Project Ontario Council of University Libraries Five Year Report Card  Forging New Partnerships  Good effort extending Refworks to schools outside Ontario  Has opened up opportunities for cooperation with digitization projects such as Synergies  Needs to continue to look at how to play better with others across Canada and internationally
