LOUISIANA PURCHASE & EXPLORATION

 THE WEST in 1800 – land between Appalachian Mountains & Mississippi River  France & Spain negotiating for ownership of Louisiana Territory – land between Mississippi River and Rocky Mountains  New Orleans port – claimed by French then Spanish and back to French...Napoleon plan to colonize America!

 New Orleans port closed to US shipping  Angry Americans called for war against France & Spain  Jefferson asked to buy New Orleans from France  SURPRIZE – Napoleon offered to sell ALL of Louisiana Territory! For $15 million (3 cents acre) – got approval from Congress on April 30, 1803

 LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION ◦ Jefferson chose Meriweather Lewis ◦ Lewis chose Lt. William Clark to oversee volunteers ◦ Clark brought York, African American slave – first black man that many Native American’s seen ◦ CORPS OF DISCOVERY

 Started Summer 1803  By winter arrived in St. Louis, Missouri – on Mississippi River  Waited there for official transfer of Louisiana to US  March 1804 – US flag flew over St. Louis!

 May 1804 – left St. Louis (about 40 people)  Traveled Missouri River looking for water route across continent  Establish Good relations with Native Americans  Describe plants, landscape, animals allong the route

 Winter 1804/05 – North Dakota with Mandan tribe  Spring 1805 – continue travels – with Sacagawea – Shoshone Indian w great language skills and knowledge of geography  Approach Rocky Mountains – Sacagawea met her Shoshone brother – traded horses to Lewis & Clark which enabled the journey over Rocky Mtns.

 Expedition continued to Columbia River and to Pacific Ocean  Arrived November 1805  Returned to St. Louis 1806 (downriver)  Lewis & Clark returned with valuable info – no all water route to Ocean, they had much info and good maps of Louisiana Territory

 1806 – Expedition led by ZP – left St. Louis to find source of Arkansas River and Red River  Arrested in Spanish Territory  Released in 1807 and returned  He brought back info – but incorrectly described the Great Plains as desert and not farmable
