Spain claimed a large area including Nevada. This area was past to Mexico in Several explorers including Peter Skene Ogden, Jedediah Smith, John C. Fremont, and Fremont’s guide Kit Carson explored Nevada from the 1820’s through the 1840’s.. The United states won these lands from Mexico in The California Gold Rush began in 1849 and silver and gold was found in Nevada near Virginia City in This source of wealth was called the Comstock Lode Nevada became the thirty-sixth U.S. state in In 1931 Nevada made gambling legal.
