Presentation transcript:

Purgatory (Roman Catholic) Traditional theology holds that unrepentant sinners go to hell after this life, while the redeemed go either to heaven or to a middle stage called purgatory.

According to Catholic doctrine, some souls are not sufficiently free from the temporal effects of sin and its consequences to enter the state of heaven immediately, nor are they so sinful as to be destined for hell either. Such souls, ultimately destined to be united with God in heaven, must first endure purgatory— a state of purification. In purgatory, souls "achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.

Temporal punishment and eternal punishment are incurred by mortal sin, but eternal punishment is remitted by the sacrament of reconciliation (known also as the sacrament of penance or confession). The remaining temporal punishment may be remitted by sufferings in this life, indulgences, or time after death in Purgatory.

Imagine you are standing in front of God on Judgment Day, in reference to your beliefs and actions in life, what might your conversation be like?

The Last Day (The day of Judgement) Some Christians believe that one day Jesus will return to earth. The dead will all stand before God in Judgement. Those who have accepted Jesus as their saviour will go to heaven. The rest?

Heaven Christians have different views about heaven. Some say, “God loves us so everyone will go to heaven” This is called universalism – all will eventually be saved.

Heaven Christians have different views about heaven. Others say, “only Christians go to heaven, because everyone has sinned and they are the only ones who have repented and accepted Jesus.”

Heaven Christians have different views about heaven. Others say, “Good people will go to heaven.”

Purgatory Roman Catholics believe in a middle place between Heaven and Hell called Purgatory. In purgatory you pay for your sins. This means that Roman Catholics will sometimes pray for dead people to help them to get into heaven.

Purgatory

Hell Hell is a place of everlasting suffering. Some Christians believe that all who haven’t accepted Jesus will burn there for eternity. Others might believe that a loving God could never send someone to such a place. Click here for more on Hell

Some Christians think that if you die without turning to Christ you are simply destroyed. You pass into oblivion either at death or Judgment Day. They think this is more loving than being sent to Hell. Annihilation

Salvation

Some Fundamentalist Christians believe that when some people die they will be sent to Hell to face eternal fiery punishment.
