The AD 70 Doctrine (part 5)

The C orruption of Good Doctrine Through “Realized Eschatology”

"The fall of Judaism (and its far reaching consequences) is, therefore, a major subject of the Bible. The greater portion of prophecy found its fulfillment in that event, including also the types and shadows of the law. It was the coming of Christ in glory that closely followed his coming in suffering (1 Pet. 1:11), when all things written by the prophets were fulfilled (Luke 21:22: Acts 3:21). It corresponded to the perfection of the saints (1 Cor. 13:10) when they reached adulthood in Christ, receiving their adoption, redemption, and inheritance. The eternal kingdom was possessed (Heb. 12:28) and the new heaven and earth inherited (Matt. 5:5; Rev. 21:1, 7)" (King, The Spirit of Prophecy, p. 239).

Corruption Of The Covenants! Section 2

New Covenant (Gospel) Overlapping Covenants? Old Covenant (Law of Moses) 70 AD33 AD OVERLAP ~ 40 years

Overlapping of Covenants? "Christianity is a fulfillment of the prophecies, types and shadows of the law and not merely a ‘fill-in’ between Judaism and another age to come. Abraham had two sons, and there was no gap between them. They overlapped a little, but Isaac ‘came on’ when Ishmael ‘went out.’ The son born of the spirit was given the place and inheritance of the son born of the flesh. Hence, this simple allegory (Gal. 4:21-31) establishes the ‘Spirit of Prophecy,’ confirming prophecy’s fulfillment in the spiritual seed of Abraham through Christ (Gal. 3:16, 26-29), and beyond the fall of Jerusalem these prophecies cannot be extended." (King, The Spirit of Prophecy, p. 239)

Galatians 4:21-31 SYMBOLIC (allegory) –S–S ARAH freewoman → Isaac → New Covenant → children of promise/Spirit → Christians –H–H AGAR bondwoman → Ishmael → Old Covenant/Law → children of bondage/flesh → Jews

▪H▪He of the bondwoman (4:23) –J–J ews, born of the flesh (Rom. 9:6-9) –p–p ersecutors of the children of promise (4:28, 29; cf. Gen. 21:9) ▪H▪He of the freewoman (4:23) –C–C hild of promise –F–F ree –C–C hristians

▪A▪A Jerusalem in bondage versus the Jerusalem which is above (4:25, 26) –n–n ot part of the same, but distinct from one another (4:30, 31)! –J–J erusalem above did not rise from the ashes of the Jerusalem below –O–O ne could not be a child of the bondwoman and of the freewoman at same time

▪The Point of the Allegory: – Design not to teach an overlapping of covenants ▪Isaac did not rise out of the deadness of Ishmael! ▪Isaac did not become heir only when Ishmael was sent away ▪Son of bondwoman shall not be heir “with” son of freewoman

Galatians 4:21-31 ▪The Point of the Allegory: – Design is a warning to not revert to the bondage of the Law of Moses (4:21) ▪live as children of the freewoman through the faith – 2:16, 20, 21; 3:23-25; 4:3-5; 5:1-4 ▪Applications can still exist today – Who are we listening to?

No Overlapping of Covenants If both were viable covenants at the same time ▪ Spiritual adultery (Rom. 7:1-6) ▪ The power of the cross is diminished (Col. 2:13-15) ▪ Two priesthoods are in force at the same time (Heb. 7:11-14)

No Overlapping of Covenants If both were viable covenants at the same time ▪ Makes Jesus FAIL to do what He INTENDED to do when He came to earth (Heb. 10:9, 10)

No Overlapping of Covenants If both were viable covenants at the same time ▪ Peace between Jew/Gentile/God was not achieved when Christ came to achieve it on the cross but only in the ashes of Jerusalem (Eph. 2:13-18)
