DENTAL PATIENT EDUCATION DAST 111

PURPOSE This course will provide an opportunity for the students enrolled in the Dental Assisting program at Sacramento City College to focus on the study of nutrition from a whole body concept and its interrelated effects on the oral environment. The dental assisting students will integrate these concepts with preventive dentistry concepts and synthesize the information to educate the dental patient. The dental assistant will assume a professional role to educate and motivate patients to improve their dental and overall health in the community and public health situations.

GOALS ▪ This course will serve as an interactive and engaging compilation of prerequisite course work to improve communication between the patient and the clinician. ▪ This course will assist the students in effectively educating and motivating dental patients on nutrition and oral health. ▪ This course will serve to assist the dental assisting students in improving overall state and national written examination scores. ▪ This course will serve to improve student and employer satisfaction rates with regard to patient communication.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES ▪ Upon completion of this course, 1.The dental assisting student will design a personalized plaque control program for a clinical patient based on the patients individual needs. 2.The dental assisting student will describe the role nutrition plays in caries development during clinical treatment to educate the patient based on the patients specific needs. 3.The dental assisting student will identify the role of fluorides in preventive dentistry, the types of fluoride available, and appropriate recommendations for usage.
