Investigations: “Number Games and Story Problems” CRAYON PUZZLES Investigations: “Number Games and Story Problems” By:

Lesson Plans After working with Crayon Puzzles, Sessions 7, 8, and 9, in the book “Number Games and Story Problems”, you can either use this template in front of the class as a group lesson, or take your class to the computer lab to do together. This can even be used as an assessment after the kids have worked with Crayon Puzzles. For the first 5 slides, (after the Introduction slide) the students can manipulate the stack of crayons into rows or columns to show the groups that equal 10. They can choose any 5 ways and then next to the red star at the bottom, they can write an equation. The next 7-12 are some puzzles that are from your Investigations book. Slide 15 is for you or your students to make their own puzzles. TEKS: 1.3A model and create addition and subtraction problem situations with concrete objects and write corresponding number sentences 1.3B. use concrete and pictorial models to apply basic addition and subtraction facts (up to 9 + 9 = 18 and 18 = 9 – 9) 1.11C select or develop an appropriate problem solving plan or strategy including drawing a picture, looking for a pattern, systematic guessing and checking, and acting it out in order to solve a problem 1.11D use tools such as real objects, manipulatives and technology to solve problems 1.12A explain and record observations using objects, words, pictures, numbers and technology

Lesson Plan cont. When working in the lab, the students can then print out their slides. When you go to print, you need to choose “handouts” and then it will print six slides on a page. The slides can then be cut out and stapled together and the kids have a small book to take home with them. This can be done whether a student is using it for a group lesson, a practice lesson, or an assessment. Don’t forget to have the kids copy and paste the template to their own directory before they open it up as individuals!!!! Otherwise, you will have quite a problem when you try to save it! Delete slides 2 and 3 before letting the kids use this template.
