Course Introduction Course Navigation Click on the “Course Navigation” tab (above) to familiarize yourself with the many ways you can move throughout this course and access additional media along the way. Questions and other exercises are included throughout the program to help assess your familiarity with the subject matter.

Course Introduction Course Description Welcome to the online training course for Parastomal Hernia Repair with Parietex™ Parastomal Mesh. In this lesson you will learn about the different types of ostomys, the anatomy of parastomal hernias, the possible types of repair, and the unique benefits that Parietex™ Parastomal Mesh brings to these outcomes. At the end of this lesson you will understand the challenges of a successful parastomal hernia repair and how Parietex™ Parastomal Mesh overcomes these challenges in order to achieve an optimal result.

Course Introduction Sections What is a Stoma? Definition of a Hernia Description and History of Parastomal Hernias Applying Mesh for Parastomal Hernia Repair Parietex™ Parastomal Mesh for Parastomal Hernia Repair Final Exam

Section 1 What is a Stoma? Objectives Upon completion of this section, you should be able to: Identify the different types of stoma Explain why surgeons may have to create stoma

What is a Stoma? Introduction During some surgical procedures involving the bowels, surgeons may have to create a stoma in order to release the load on the bowels either for a limited period of time (temporary ostomy) or permanently (definitive ostomy). A colostomy might be performed due to: - Cancer - Diverticulitis - Obstructed Anus - Hirschsprung disease - Trauma to the affected area An ileostomy might be performed due to: - Ulcerative Colitis, - Crohn’s disease - Polyps

What is a Stoma? Different Types of Stoma: Colostomy: stoma involving the colon Ileostomy: stoma involving the ileum A B C D The fecal material drains into a bag worn on the abdomen A. Sigmoid Colostomy B. Descending Colostomy C. Transverse D. Ascending Colostomy

Section 2 Definition of a Hernia Objectives Upon completion of this section, you should be able to: Define hernia Define parastomal hernia

Definition of a Hernia Definitions * Hernia: Protrusion or projection of an organ or part of an organ through the wall of the cavity that normally contains it. Parastomal hernia: An incisional hernia at the site or in the vicinity of a stoma. Herniation around a colostomy site has been long recognized as a complication of this surgery. *Approximately 20-30% of patients with a stoma will present with a herniation at the site. Factors: - Fluctuating intra-abdominal pressure - Aging - Weight change and loss of abdominal muscle tone - Obesity - Malnutrition - Chronic cough http://www.fascrs.org/physicians/education/core_subjects/2003/ostomies_stomal_therapy/ *
