CSOEM Materials Advisory Group Summer Meeting: Status Update - UNS S66286 Elevated Temperature Tensile Testing Tim Haeberle Chief Consulting Engineer – Materials and Processes GE Oil & Gas 24 June 2015

Background Issue initially raised at API SC6 Summer Meeting in 2013 by Joel Russo –Existing derating values in API 6A Appendix G and API TR6MET for ASTM UNS S66286 (A453 Grade 660) stainless steels seem to be unrealistic –The tables indicate the strength starts to decrease, but then increases with higher temperatures UNS S66286 derating values were removed from Appendix G in API 6A Errata 6 API SRRR approved in 2014 to provide funding for new elevated temperature tensile testing. 2

Background - Scope of API SRRR Obtain ASTM A453 Grade 660 Type D stainless steel bar stock from 3 heats Have 1-3 independent test labs perform elevated temperature tensile testing The test temperatures are to be room temp, 300F, 350F, 400F, and 450F 3 tensile test specimens from each heat are to be tested at each temperature by each lab L Street, NW Washington, DC

API TG Formed 1.Bill Bailey – Baker Hughes 2.Chris Carlton – Chevron 3.Hernan Enrique Rincon – ConocoPhillips 4.Joel Russo – FMC 5.Joshua Rooker – Bohler-Edelstal 6.Egidio Marotta – GE 7.Pat Markle – ATI Metals 8.Saki Krishnamurthy – Carpenter Technology 9.Tim Haeberle – GE 10.Tinsley S. Fehnel – Carpenter Technology 4 Status Update – Actions Taken

Bill Bailey raised questions regarding the potential of a low temperature aging phenomena increasing the strength of Grade 660 Was the upward trend of the yield strength with increasing temperature evidence of an aging phenomena or something else? Tinsley Fehnel with Carpenter Technology coordinated a Carpenter Technology aging study All other TG activities were put on hold until this issue was resolved (see next slide for results). 5

Summary Carpenter Technology has performed a laboratory aging study of Grade 660 and eliminated low temperature aging as a potential cause of the upwards trend in the original AWHEM data The larger Elevated Temperature Testing TG has been surveying labs to identify (1) the best labs and (2) the best lab practices for elevated temperature tensile testing A proposed preliminary test matrix has been developed for the Grade 660 testing, but needs to be finalized by the TG A test procedure that can be sent to the labs needs to be generated by the TG Test material needs to be obtained (the mills will donate) Formal quotes need to be obtained from the labs for testing PO’s need to be issued to test labs by API. 8

Elevated Temperature Derating Data Issues The data in API Technical Report 6MET shows the yield strength of Grade 660 stainless steel is increasing with increasing temperature The yield strength of the other alloys decreases 11

Manufacturer Input Carpenter Technology historical data shows excellent 0.2% offset yield retention –Why does Grade 660 show such excellent retention? –Data does not cover exact temperatures used by API, but does show trend 12
