Product Ratings and Performance Certifications Presented by: Tom Gustafson, Hartzell Fan, Inc. AMCA International Technical Seminar 2009

Product Rating- Slide 2 The Air Movement and Control Association International (AMCA), has met the standards and requirements of the Registered Continuing Education Providers Program. Credit earned on completion of this program will be reported to the RCEPP. A certificate of completion will be issued to each participant. As such, it does not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by NCEES or RCEPP.

Product Rating- Slide 3 Learning Objectives -Overview of how catalog ratings are developed -Review the ‘fine print’ that goes along with the rating -Understand the AMCA Certified Ratings Program and it’s objectives -See the various ratings available -Exposure to the lab accreditation program

Product Rating- Slide 4 What Does This Seal Mean?

Product Rating- Slide 5 Who Is AMCA? AMCA is a world wide organization A main focus is establishing rating integrity for products in the air moving industry

Product Rating- Slide 6 Available Certifications – Varies with product

Product Rating- Slide 7 Requirements To Use the AMCA Seal Catalog ratings based on tests A published catalog which includes ratings  AMCA verifies the ratings  AMCA ensures that the performance statements are correct Continual manufacturing check tests

Product Rating- Slide 8 Published Performance Ratings Includes statements and descriptions to identify:  Installation Type (e.g. Ducted Inlet)  Drive Losses (e.g. with belt losses)  Test Figure (for dampers)  Power  Density  Appurtenances (e.g. inlet screen)

Product Rating- Slide 9 Product Ratings Are Based on Testing Test procedures are governed by published test standards AMCA standards are available for a variety of products Many test standards have ANSI approval (national standards) AMCA standards are generally accepted internationally

Product Rating- Slide 10 Product Ratings For Fans Aerodynamic Performance  Airflow Rate  Pressure Rise  Power Sound Performance  Inlet Sound, Outlet Sound, and/or Total Sound  Sound Power, A-weighted or Sones Must have certified air to have certified sound

Product Rating- Slide 11 AMCA 210 – Air Performance Test

Product Rating- Slide 12 Other Air Test Standards AMCA 220 – Air Curtain Test AMCA 230 – Circulator Fans AMCA 240 – Positive Pressure Ventilators AMCA 250 – Jet Fans Positive Pressure Ventilator Test

Product Rating- Slide 13 Sound Performance Testing AMCA 300 – Reverberant Room AMCA 330 – In Duct Sound Test AMCA 320 – Sound Intensity Method

Product Rating- Slide 14 Product Ratings For Dampers Air Performance (Pressure Drop) Leakage Performance

Product Rating- Slide 15 AMCA 500-D Damper Testing

Product Rating- Slide 16 Product Ratings For Louvers Air Performance (Pressure Drop) Air Performance (Pressure Drop) Leakage Performance (optional) Leakage Performance (optional) Resistance to Water Penetration (optional) Resistance to Water Penetration (optional) Resistance to Wind Driven Rain (optional) Resistance to Wind Driven Rain (optional)

Product Rating- Slide 17 AMCA 500-L Damper Testing

Product Rating- Slide 18 Ratings For Airflow Measurement Stations Accuracy Pressure Drop

Product Rating- Slide 19 ANSI/AMCA 610-Testing For Airflow Measurement Stations

Product Rating- Slide 20 Ratings For Acoustical Duct Silencers Dynamic Insertion Loss Airflow Generated Noise Pressure Drop

Product Rating- Slide 21 ASTM E477 Duct Silencer Test Code E477 Standard Test Method for Measuring Acoustical and Airflow Performance of Duct Liner Materials and Prefabricated Silencers Note: This is not an AMCA Standard

Product Rating- Slide 22 Testing Conformance How do we know that the lab doing the testing is conforming to the standards? Use the lab accreditation program

Product Rating- Slide 23 Laboratory Accreditation Program AMCA staff witnesses a test performed at the lab desiring accreditation  Results are compared with the test results of the same sample tested at the AMCA laboratory Test equipment and procedures are checked Verifies that laboratories are capable of testing to the standards Certified ratings require testing in an AMCA International accredited laboratory

Product Rating- Slide 24 AMCA 111 Laboratory Accreditation Program

Product Rating- Slide 25 Certification Procedure Sometimes not all product sizes need to be tested  Fans can use geometric proportionality  Testing a smaller fan can be use to rate a larger fan  Other products have specific test sizes

Product Rating- Slide 26 Certified Ratings Summary Not all published ratings are certified Ratings may be certified only by the manufacturer The ratings for products bearing the AMCA seal have a precise meaning

Product Rating- Slide 27 AMCA International Licensed Products Testing performed at AMCA or in an AMCA accredited Lab Ratings have been checked by an independent 3 rd party (AMCA) Samples are periodically tested by an independent 3 rd party Ratings are published in conformance with standardized rating procedures Only AMCA licensed products may bear the AMCA seal

Product Rating- Slide 28 AMCA Publications Governing Certified Ratings AMCA 11 Certified Ratings Program Operating Manual AMCA 211 Product Rating Manual For Air Performance AMCA 311 Product Rating Manual For Sound Performance AMCA 511 Cert.
