RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Be intentional Be data driven Be collaborative Be organized and flexible Make a difference Copyright © 2012 Right Reason Technologies, LLC Small Group Instruction Should Always:

RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Purposes of Small Group Instruction Reinforces previously taught skills Increases instructional time for specific skills Increases interaction between the teacher and the students Provides students with an environment in which they may feel more comfortable to ask questions or relay thoughts and ideas Promotes discussion Provides students with additional corrective feedback Provides organization and flexibility to support multiple, simultaneous tasks within the classroom

RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Purposes of Small Group Instruction Most importantly… Small Group Instruction provides DIFFERENTIAT ION!

RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Differentiation Teachers proactively plan varied approaches to what students need to learn how they will learn it how they will show what they have learned in order to increase the likelihood that each student will learn as much as he or she can, as efficiently as possible.

RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Step 1: Develop a classroom plan which supports the implementation of small group instruction. Establish routines in the classroom. Teach students the routine. Inform students of your expectations for them. Strategically arrange the classroom. Allocate time for small group instruction. Daily At least 30 minutes per session

RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Step 2: Establish a purpose for the small group instruction. Pre-teaching Re-teaching Reinforcement Additional practice Enrichment

RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Pre-teaching Small group instruction is beneficial to pre-teach a core skill that will be introduced to the whole group/class. This is helpful for students who: Lack background knowledge Require additional vocabulary Will benefit from additional resources or models Require additional instructional time

RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Re-teaching Small group instruction is beneficial to re-teach a core skill that was not mastered by a small group of students. This is helpful for students who: Did not understand a part or multiple parts of a lesson that was taught to the whole group/class Will benefit from seeing a specific skill presented in a completely different way Were not able to accurately complete the independent practice within the lesson Require additional instructional time

RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Reinforcement Small group instruction is beneficial to reinforce a core skill that was taught to the whole group/class. This is helpful for students who: Will benefit from additional resources or models Require additional instructional time Require additional examples for extended practice

RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Additional Practice Small group instruction is beneficial to provide additional practice for a core skill that was introduced to the whole group/class. This is helpful for students who: Require more time to practice the skill Require additional guided practice Will benefit from seeing practice tasks in different ways

RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Enrichment Small group instruction is beneficial to provide enrichment for students who have demonstrated mastery of a core skill that was taught to the whole group/class. This is helpful for students who: Have mastered the skill that was introduced Are prepared to apply the skill at higher levels of thinking

RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Step 3: Establishing Small Groups Small groups should be flexible Regardless of the purpose for the small group instruction, small groups should be established based on: DATA, DATA, DATA!

RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Data for Establishing Small Groups Informal formative assessments Formal formative assessments Benchmark assessments State assessments Local assessments

RIGHT REASON TECHNOLOGIES YOUR SOLUTION FOR STUDENT SUCCESS Informal Formative Assessments Purpose Re-teach, reinforcement, additional practice, enrichment Independent practice from a lesson taught Post-it notes Clipboard check off Popsicle sticks
