A story A boy A mother A father
What’s behind the story
Chinese Culture Respect relationships (family, friendship, seniority) Humble as a virtue (not boastful) Less expressive (quiet & reserved) but perseverance Personal & physical space (limited) Harmony (less conflict)
Chinese Culture Good/ Bad Less expressive – misunderstanding Respectful to elder – difficult to break from family bondage Group decision – not individualistic Guilty conscious Destiny/ Fate Submissive/ obedience
Variations Do not group Chinese immigrants together. Differences exist among first generation and second- or third- generation immigrants. Chinese from Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong may not be the same.
Conclusion There is no “One Size fits All”. (Therefore, do not stereotype!!!) Due to globalization and the rapid flow of information (internet, media etc.), the cultural differences among different nationalities seem to get narrower. Take time and patience to understand one’s culture.
