Artist facts b. July 12, 1884, d. Jan. 24, 1920 Lived in Italy and Paris Modigliani had to struggle against poverty and chronic ill health-lead to a sad life. Interested in African masks and sculpture;the faces in his paintings are flat and mask-like, with almond eyes, twisted noses, pursed mouths, and elongated necks.
