Bell Quiz

Objectives Review how to write large and small numbers in scientific notation. Multiply and divide numbers written in scientific notation by applying the rules of exponents.

Scientific Notation Very large or very small numbers are often written in scientific notation. Scientific notation is a method of writing a number as the product of a number greater than or equal to 1 but less than 10 and a power of ten.

Example 1 Writing Numbers in Scientific Notation Write the number in scientific notation. 856,000

Lesson Practice Write the number in scientific notation. 1,234,000

Example 2 Writing Numbers in Scientific Notation Write the number in scientific notation

Lesson Practice Write the number in scientific notation

Scientific Notation To multiply numbers in scientific notation: – Multiply the coefficients. – Then add the powers. – If the result is not in scientific notation, adjust it so that it is.

Example 3 Multiplying Numbers in Scientific Notation Find the product. Write the answer in scientific notation. (5.82 x 10 3 ) (6.13 x )

Lesson Practice Find the product. Write the answer in scientific notation. (5.7 x 10 5 ) (1.8 x 10 3 )

Scientific Notation To divide numbers in scientific notation: – Divide the coefficients. – Then subtract the powers. – If the result is not in scientific notation, adjust it so that it is.

Example 4 Dividing Numbers in Scientific Notation Find the quotient. Write the answer in scientific notation. 1.2 x x 10 6

Lesson Practice Find the quotient. Write the answer in scientific notation x 10 – x 10 – 6

Example 5 Comparing Expressions with Scientific Notation Find the quotient. Write the answer in scientific notation. 7.2 x x x x 10 5 ○

Lesson Practice Find the quotient. Write the answer in scientific notation x x x x 10 5 ○

Example 6 Application: Speed of Light The speed of light is 3 x 10 8 meters per second. If the Earth is 1.47 x meters from the sun, how many seconds does it take light to reach Earth from the sun? Write the answer in scientific notation.

Lesson Practice The speed of light is 3 x 10 8 meters per second. If the Mars is 2.25 x meters from the sun, how many seconds does it take light to reach Mars from the sun? Write the answer in scientific notation.
