1 Lesson Objectives Perform mathematical operations in scientific notation

2 Operations in Scientific Notation
Any number in scientific notation can be added, subtracted, multiplied, or divided

3 Operations in Scientific Notation
For numbers in scientific notation to be added or subtracted, they must have the same exponent value If this is true, just add or subtract the coefficients If this is not true, you must move the decimal point

4 Addition/Subtraction Examples
6.7 x x 103 8.8 x 103

5 Addition/Subtraction Examples
8.3 x 10-2 – 4.7 x 10-2 3.6 x 10-2

6 Addition/Subtraction Examples
5.7 x x 1011 13.1 x 1011 1.31 x 1012

7 Addition/Subtraction Examples
9.4 x 10-3 – 3.2 x 10-4 94 x 10-4 – 3.2 x 10-4 90.8 x 10-4 9.08 x 10-3=9 x 10-3

8 Addition/Subtraction Examples
6.8 x x 109 0.068 x x 109 1.668 x = 1.7x109

9 Operations in Scientific Notation
For numbers in scientific notation to be multiplied or divided, they do not have to have the same exponent value Multiply or divide the coefficients If you multiply, add the exponents If you divide, subtract the exponents (always start with the one being divided)

10 Multiplication/Division Examples
2.3 x 104 x 3.5 x 107 8.1 x 1011

11 Multiplication/Division Examples
7.4 x 109 / 1.9 x 103 3.9 x 106

12 Multiplication/Division Examples
8.7 x 10-3 x 3.3 x 104 28.7 x 101 2.9 x 102

13 Multiplication/Division Examples
3.2 x 10-5 / 9.5 x 103 0.337 x 10-8 3.4 x 10-9
