Think Pair Share What is one important rule to live by? These “rules” are called morals. Sometimes authors use stories to teach us morals. There are lessons that the author wants us to learn. As you read, you will be looking for clues to determine (figure out) what the moral, or the theme, of the story is.

Abby’s Gift Abby couldn’t wait for her birthday. She just know she was going to get the new Cheeky doll that everyone wanted. Abby wanted to be the first kid in her class to have the Cheeky doll. She was ready to show everyone that she gets whatever she wants. The morning of Abby’s birthday, she woke up early and ran downstairs. There on the table was the Cheeky doll! Abby was so excited. She grabbed the doll and ran to school. All morning, other kids crowded around her desk to look at the doll. That afternoon when Abby was walking home, she saw a sign on the door of the veterinarian’s office asking for donations for a group of puppies whose mother had died. The veterinarian needed money to buy formula and special bottles to feed the puppies. Abby thought for a minute, and then she ran to the toy store. She returned the Cheeky doll and took the money to the veterinarian. The vet was so happy that he told Abby she could come back every Saturday to help feed the puppies. For the next six weeks, Abby spent her hours each morning watching the puppies eat and grow into healthy young dogs. Abby was proud that she used the money from her Cheeky doll to do something nice for others. The theme (moral) of this story is “It is better to give than to receive.” Can you find some clues that let us know that this is what the author wants to teach us? What are some clues that support (prove) the theme, “it is better to give than to receive”?

Listening Comprehension I Have a Sister My Sister is Deaf by Jeanne Whitehouse Peterson. Let’s preview the story As I read I will look for clues from the story that support (prove) the theme (moral), “people are special in different ways.” Pgs. 2-8
