. One afternoon Megan received an invitation to a birthday party. It was for her friend, Tracy. Megan had been to birthday parties before, but this one was special. This was a birthday party sleepover. Megan was very excited. Megan wanted to buy Tracy just the right present. Megan knew she would be going to the toy store the next day to buy a sleeping bag. She would look for Tracy’s present.

Lesson 4 The next day, Megan and her mother went to the toy store. They waved to the owner, Mr. Martinez, as they walked in. Megan picked out a sleeping bag for the party. Mr. Martinez climbed on a stool and brought in down from the high shelf. While Mr. Martinez and Megan’s mother were talking, Megan found a present for Tracy. It was a small doll that was as big as the palm of her hand. The doll came in a little case. The little case opened up to a house for the doll.

Lesson 4 Megan remembered that sometimes under the couch cushions there were coins. Her mother often let her keep the coins when she found them. She looked and found five pennies, two nickels, one dime, and one quarter. She counted it with her mother, and she had 50 cents. Megan thought that was a lot of money. But she knew she needed more. She asked her mother for help.

Lesson 4 Megan’s mother said that she would pay Megan to do extra chores. Each time Megan finished a chore, she would get 25 cents. After a few days, she had earned a dollar.

Megan saved all of the money she earned in her savings bank. She saved enough money to help buy Tracy’s present. Megan’s mother took her back to the toy store. She found the doll quickly and went to the checkout line. Megan’s mother placed some money on the counter. Then Megan said, “ I have the rest of the money, Mr. Martinez.” She put her savings bank on the counter. After they paid for the doll, Megan had a little money left over. She decided she would not spend it. She put the money back in her savings bank and took it home.
