My uncle says the two always go together. When people as your age, he said, always say seventeen and insane. Isn't this a nice time of night to walk? I like to smell things and look at things, and sometimes stay up all night, walking, and watch the sun rise.'"

I thought I'd take a chance. I'm good at spotting people who don't belong. As soon as I saw you I knew you were against them'“ ~ Julia

Supreme Authority Overrides Character’s Own Beliefs “At the apex of the pyramid comes Big Brother. Big Brother is infallible and all-powerful. Every success, every achievement, every victory, every scientific discovery, all knowledge, all wisdom, all happiness, all virtue, are held to issue to directly from his leadership and inspiration.” - Big Brother is an indestructible tyrant Controlling the minds of citizens. Fahrenheit 451 -"I lay down for a catnap and in this dream you and I, Montag, got into a furious debate on books. You towered with rage, yelled quotes at me. I calmly parried every thrust. 'Power,' I said. And you. quoting Dr. Johnson, said 'Knowledge is more than equivalent to force!' And I said, 'Well, Dr. Johnson also aid, dear boy, that "He is no wise man that will quit a certainty for an uncertainty.” Stick with the firemen, Montag. All else is dreary chaos!” - Beatty is trying to convince Montag to stick to the tradition of firemen: BURN BOOKS

Supreme Authority Overrides Character’s Own Beliefs “He gazed up at the enormous face. Forty years it had taken him to lean what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark mustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won his victory over himself. he loved Big Brother.” -Winston was forced to love Big Brother; the supreme authority of Big Brother transformed Winston into a man who acknowledges Big Brother as the great leader. Fahrenheit "'What, the Hound?' The captain studied his cards. 'Come off it. It doesn't like or dislike. It just 'functions'. It's like a lesson in ballistics. It has a trajectory we decide on for it. It follows through. It targets itself, and cuts off. It's only copper wire, storage batteries, and electricity.'" - Montag is being chased by the Hound at the end of the book, because he was discovered with books in his house.

Lack of Religion 1984 "Never again will you be capable of ordinary human feeling. Everything will be dead inside you. Never again will you be capable of love, or friendship, or joy of living, or laughter, or curiosity, or courage, or integrity. You will be hollow.” "Never again will you be capable of ordinary human feeling. Everything will be dead inside you. Never again will you be capable of love, or friendship, or joy of living, or laughter, or curiosity, or courage, or integrity. You will be hollow.” - The Inner Party disallows any religious practices because it will entail the advancement in questioning history and existence. Fahrenheit 451 “How many copies of the Bible are left in this country? I don’t know what you are talking about!” - Guy Montag, as well as other members of his society, is not permitted to obtain any form of books, especially Bibles since history is being destroyed. Censorship

1984 “religious practices which had been long abandoned” - Religious beliefs have been inexistent in Oceania for a while now since there are no longer sermons or preachers to address the liturgy. The only religion in 1984 is Big Brother and the religion espoused by the party. Fahrenheit 451 “The faces of those enameled creatures meant nothing to him” - Montag was standing in this ”strange” church for a while trying to better understand the Christian religion, however, he could not decipher the faces of the saints because he had never studied the practice of any religion. The primary form of religion is instead the fire department. Never Taught Lack of Religion

1984 “It was almost normal for people over thirty to be frightened of their own children” Winston always had a great fear of young brainwashed party members who rat out their parents Children involved in government early Fahrenheit 451 “Caesarians or not, children are ruinous, you’re out of your mind” “I’m afraid of children my own age. They kill each other” Contribution to Society

1984 Winston’s role as a history destroyer Keeps everyone happy Prevention of government demise Fahrenheit 451 “Another hour of transcription history” Montag’s job is to destroy literature/history Works for the government as the government Contribution to Society

1984 No freedom of choice Everything predestined by government Children feared by adults Fahrenheit 451 Freedom of thought discouraged Government allows diverse aspiration Children ignored by adults
