Updates on Regional Tobacco Control Activities- AFRO R. Machang’u

Technical Support to Countries AFRO continued to provide technical support to countries in: Developing TC policy and legislation (Namibia, Lesotho Botswana) Coordination of TC database development (GYTS-15.GATS 6 Capacity development in through TC policy workshops (Mauritius, Cameroon) TC awareness enhancement through World No Tobacco Days Capacity dev in Health and Trade issues/illicit trade

Support the establishment of the Centre for Tobacco Control in Africa(CTCA) AFRO and TFI supported the establishment of CTCA to enhance tobacco control capacity in Africa CTCA is funded by B&MG Foundation through WHO and was launched in 2011 CTCA is hosted by the Makerere University School of Public Health, Kampala, Uganda CTCA works primarily with the governments five countries (Angola, Kenya, Mauritania, South Africa and Uganda) but other countries can be eligible.

Updates on AFRO support to countries through the Centre Engagement in tobacco control with the govts of the five countries (Angola, Kenya, Mauritania South Africa and Uganda ( ) TC capacity assessment (Kenya, Mauritania, South Africa and Uganda) ( ) Development of human resource capacity through training workshops on FCTC and TC strategies Development of tobacco control policy and legislation (Kenya, Uganda, Mauritania)

AFRO Collaboration with African Regional Economic Blocs Engagement with the East African Community (EAC) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) in research on tobacco economics improvement of tobacco taxation (2012) Research on tobacco economics and taxation is also being supported in Ghana, Senegal and Zambia
