Promoting a Population Health Approach  Recognize that health is determined by complex interactions between social and economic factors, the physical environment and individual behavior.

Examples of MHP Strategies and Initiatives

Partnering with Public Health  MHP’s funds 75% of the health promotion standards for Ontario’s 36 public health units:  chronic disease prevention  prevention of injury and substance misuse  reproductive health  child health

Guidance Documents  Purpose- to assist boards of health to implement the new Ontario Public Health Standards  HEPAHW  First time a standard directly relates to the built environment

Built Environment Indicators  OPHS – conduct surveillance activities around physical activity  In February 2009 Provincial workgroup was formed to develop public health indicators relevant to the built environment.  Review of Literature on the effect of the built environment  Ongoing project

Healthy Communities Ontario  Enhancing health and wellbeing through inter-sectoral collaboration, community engagement and partnerships.  Three main components:  Healthy Communities Fund  Healthy Community Partnerships  Healthy Communities Consortium

Healthy Communities Ontario Priorities 1. Educate and develop food skills 2. Increase access to recreation, sport and physical activity 3. Increase access to healthier food 4. Support active transportation and improve the built environment 5. Increase tobacco free environments and smoking cessation services 6. Educate the public about the risks of tobacco use 7. Increase resiliency in youth and adults re: alcohol and drug use 8. Increase access to mental health prevention and promotion programs and supports 9. Promote safe environments that prevent injury

Ontario Trails Strategy  Long-term plan that establishes strategic directions for planning, managing, promoting and using trails in Ontario  the Strategy was launched which includes $3.5 million in funding over five years for implementation  Review 2010
