Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, and Consequences Discrimination Against Women By: Delaney Ahn & Grace Sullivan

Women and the War Women were often thought of as weak. –They were supposed to stay at home and take care of the family. –It was thought of a man’s job to fight. –Studies prove that women actually had a longer pain tolerance than men because of the long, hard work at home. –The higher ranking men in the army thought that women would give up and not succeed in their mission.

Soon women felt that they had a right to serve for their country just like men did. After a lot of debate, women weren’t given a big part in the war, but were still given missions to fly aircraft. Amelia Earhart inspired many women to fly and not worry about what men said or thought of them. They were also allowed to be medical assistants. They didn’t have the main role of doctor but they were allowed to help them.

Verbal Verbal abuse is one of the most common forms of abuse used against women. You often don’t hear about many situations of verbal abuse because people are unsure when this happens to them. Verbal abuse can also be performed electronically. »Electronic abuse is becoming more and more common because of chat rooms and social networks.

Verbal abuse destroys self confidence for many women. If the verbal abuse comes from someone close who “loves them”, then these hurtful words must be true. That is one of the many feelings that verbally abused women have. Women often don’t seek help because their self-esteem is so low.

Physical Physical abuse occurs more in couples. You can see the results of physical abuse with your eyes instead of seeing the emotional differences in a woman who has been verbally abused. Physical abuse is normally used as a threat or a punishment. Sometimes it could be fighting over money.

Mental Mental abuse is commonly caused by the other two forms of abuse. Let’s say a woman was beaten, she would start looking at everyone differently, with fear. Women are often less social when mentally abused.

There are over 3 billion women alive today in the world. 1 in 3 women will be abused sometime in there life in some way.

Job Offers InformationManWoman Years of Experience35 Children?NoYes Married?Yes This table above shows information that they might ask at a job interview. Believe it or not, with the woman having more experience than the man, she still has a lower rate of getting the job!

Even though we have improved a lot in workplace discrimination, most women still remain at lower level jobs. Young women without children are still at a disadvantage because their employer is afraid that they will take too much time on maternity leave if they become pregnant.

Salary Income ManWoman $1.00$0.80 The table above shows salaries that are based on the same job & experience. Men with children appear to get a pay raise when women with children lose money. Women lawyer’s make 59% of what a man lawyer makes.

Employment A white man is 3 times as likely to get a job than a black woman. White men are 3 times as likely to get the job as manager than a black woman. Although half of the manager’s are women, only 16% of women are higher ranking specialists.

Women used to have a lower chance of going to college. They were supposed to stay home and take care of the house. Professor's of college’s didn’t want women attending their campuses because they thought that the men would be distracted and the men wouldn’t complete their work.

Women had a hard time getting jobs because of education discrimination. A lot of the time, to get a good job, you need a college education. Many father’s thought “Why bother educating our girls if the will never make it anyway?”

There are 100 million children that do not have access to education. 60% of those children are female. In the world, 960 million adults are illiterate. Over 2/3’s of them are women.

Children's Sports Studies show that 6 year old girls think of boys to be more sportier than themselves. That can be a start of low self-esteem. Girls thought that activities such as martial arts and team sports were only for boys.

College Sports Men thought that women shouldn’t be allowed to participate in sports because they weren’t tough enough. After women found out that sports were not just for men they started wanting to be involved with these activities. Many supporters say that being active in sports help build self-esteem and complete their accomplishments.

Olympic Games At the Olympic Games in 1992, 35 countries had no women athletes in their teams. One of those teams refused to walk behind a Spanish woman athlete at the opening ceremony.

Discrimination against women is unfair and un-American, but unfortunately it is still going on!
