Mr Kelly’s: Course Work Guide V E T N I S What you need to do! TO GET 3 MARKS! Problem For full marks you must solve a problem. To do this you must have a chosen target market group, (TMG) in mind. So how do you go about choosing a TMG. Well it really does depend on who you want to aim your product at. The easiest way to work this out is by creating a mind-map /brain storm and ask who it is that, wants, buys, needs uses the product that you will be designing and making. IGATE

Mr Kelly’s: Course Work Guide V E T N I S What you need to do! TO GET 3 MARKS! Problem In this case your problem is to design and manufacture the following: A 3D prototype (model) of a perfume made from foam or any suitable material, a /fragrance bottle to scale, (actual size). Card board box packaging. Internal packaging, (could be vacuum formed). A 2D leaflet promoting your product and other products by the manufacturer. IGATE

Mr Kelly’s: Course Work Guide V E T N I S What you need to do! TO GET 3 MARKS! User needs This is about what your target market group, (TMG) will need to make your product an outstanding product. The packaging will need to attractive to the TMG. It will need to entice the TMG The bottle must be original design It should have a method of opening. Packaging details, such as bar-code, ingredients, country of manufacture. Information about the product. IGATE

Mr Kelly’s: Course Work Guide What you need to do! TO GET 3 MARKS! Why? Perfume & Fragrance Bottle and Packaging Who? What? When? How? Who needs it? Who uses it? What is it made from? Who wants it? This is only a basic brain storm; you will need to add lots more questions than I have put here. On the next page is an example.

Mr Kelly’s: Course Work Guide V E T N I S What you need to do! TO GET 3 MARKS! Design Brief This is about what your intentions are. It is a very short but succinct sentence / paragraph about what you intend to do. It should be written with your TMG in mind. And that’s it! Four different pieces of work that all tie in together. IGATE

Mr Kelly’s: Course Work Guide I What you need to do! TO GET 6 MARKS! Product Analysis: Existing Products (1) For this piece of work you need to examine and analyse two existing perfume/ fragrance bottles and their packaging. You can use the ACCESSFM layout that we used earlier in the year or you can devise your own. I would suggest that you put it into a table format so that you can apply the same headings for both products. You will also need to take a photograph or download an image of you chosen product. Where possible try to do a separate analysis for the packaging and for the bottle. If you can take the packaging apart it will help in analysing the development, (Net). And if the bottle can be disassembled that too would be useful. Continued on next slide N V E S T IGATE

Mr Kelly’s: Course Work Guide I What you need to do! TO GET 6 MARKS! Product Analysis: Existing Products (2) One of the main points that you will need to look at is what materials are or can be used for the packaging of the perfume/ fragrance. The choice of materials can be very diverse from basic card to metal tins that have been embossed. You will need to investigate different printing methods for packaging and the labelling of bottles. You will need to investigate how packaging is cut out, i.e. die cutting, laser cutting CAD/ CAM Again materials, this time for the bottle, cap, plastic tube (do not say plastic tube in your work), other plastics that might be a part of the lid/ top. mustYou must write a conclusion about everything that you have found out and how it will help you with your designs for your TMG. Mr Kelly’s: Course Work Guide I What you need to do! TO GET 6 MARKS! Research 2 to 4 PAGES! This is one of the most difficult sections to get right, simply because students often do too much research that is worthless! What you must do is focussed research and evaluate how it has been of use to you. So for a perfume / fragrance bottle and all of its packaging the list on the following slide will be useful. Mr Kelly’s: Course Work Guide I What you need to do! TO GET 6 MARKS! Research 2 to 4 PAGES! The Bottle Types of glass and how it is manufactured. What type of manufacturing processes are used? The cap/lid, what materials, methods, finishes are used? Try YouTube videos If it is an atomizer find out how it works and what materials it is made from. N V E S T IGATE
