IMMIGRATION: MEXICO TO THE U.S.

THERE ARE ABOUT 11 MILLION ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN THE U.S. TODAY. MANY ARE COMING FROM AND THROUGH MEXICO

About 6 of the 11 million illegal immigrants are Mexicans. Sixty percent are men. A majority live in large states like California, Texas, Illinois, New York

THERE ARE MANY REASONS FOR THIS FLOW OF PEOPLE, AND MANY ISSUES THAT WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH

SOME SAMPLE QUESTIONS THAT WE NEED TO ANSWER IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND:

WHY DO THEY COME AND WHY ARE THEY HERE? SINCE WHEN? HOW DO THEY GET HERE? WHAT IS THEIR SITUATION? WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THIS MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE FROM MEXICO TO THE U.S.?

SEVERAL ISSUES BEING DEBATED: AMNESTY? DEPORTATION? BORDER FENCE? BORDER PATROLS? IS THERE A TERRORIST THREAT? IS THERE AN ECONOMIC BURDEN? DRIVER’S LICENSES?

THE MAP WE JUST SAW ONLY TELLS US HOW MANY RESIDENTS IDENTIFY THEMSELVES AS HAVING MEXICAN ORIGIN OR ANCESTRY, NOT NECESSARILY WHICH ONES ARE LEGAL RESIDENTS, BUT … IT DOES INDICATE WHERE THE POPULATION OF MEXICAN ANCESTRY MOSTLY RESIDES WHY WOULD THEY BE THERE? ARE THERE LINKS TO THE ONGOING FLOW?

THIS OTHER MAP ONLY TELLS US IN WHICH STATES THERE ARE RESIDENTS WHO CLAIM MEXICAN ETHNICITY IS THERE CORRELATION BETWEEN BOTH MAPS, OR DOES THE SECOND MAP SUGGEST SOMETHING DIFFERENT? LOOK AGAIN …

THE PREVIOUS MAP SHOWS THE FLOW OF MONEY BACK TO MEXICO FROM THE MANY IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES IN THE U.S. IT ALSO TELLS US WHERE MONEY GOES TO MEXICO. IS THERE ANY CORRELATION BETWEEN THIS MAP AND THE OTHER MAPS? WHAT DOES THE MAP TELL US ABOUT MEXICO? LOOK AGAIN …

AND YES, WE DO HAVE A BORDER FENCE. IS THAT THE BEST WAY TO KEEP “UNWANTED” PEOPLE OUT? WHO DECIDES WHAT IS UNWANTED? HOW? IS IT WORKING? TAKE A LOOK:

AND YES, WE DO HAVE A BORDER FENCE. IS THAT THE BEST WAY TO KEEP UNWANTED PEOPLE OUT? WHO DECIDES WHAT IS UNWANTED? HOW? IS IT WORKING? TAKE A LOOK:

WE WILL TACKLE ALL OF THESE ISSUES AND MANY MORE! OUR GUIDING QUESTION WILL BE: WHAT SHOULD U.S. POLICY BE REGARDING IMMIGRATION FROM MEXICO? OUR FINAL PRODUCT WILL BE A 5 PARAGRAPH PERSUASIVE ESSAY THAT WILL REFLECT THE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH WE DO
