Foreshortened Portraits Art II - Fall 2014

Vocabulary Grid Technique – method of enlarging a small image with the use of a grid of squares. Foreshortening - method of rendering a specific object or figure in a picture to create distorted depth. Often the artist or photographer shoots the photograph at an unusual angle to produce the look of forced perspective, and the illusion of space.

1. Birds Eye View Step 1 – Taking Your Photo 2. Bulls Eye View 3. Worms Eye View A view from above; looking down on the subject A “straight on” view. A view from below; looking up at the subject

Crop and print photo on Adobe Photoshop CS2. ***See additional document for printing instructions. Step 2 – Printing Your Photo

Step 3 – Figure Gesture Drawing

Option 1 Picture = 1 inch grid Paper = 2 inch grid Step 4 – Creating Your Grid Option 2 Picture = 1 ½ inch grid Paper = 2 ½ inch grid How do you know you have created your grid correctly? There should be the same number of squares on the picture and paper.

Drawing Pencils 101 Ebony –soft, dense graphite pencil. Can create smooth textures and wide range of values. H Series (Ex. 2H, 3H, etc.) – the higher the number the harder the lead it (lighter the value) HB – similar to a #2 pencil. Average of H and B series. B Series (Ex. 2B, 3B, etc.) – higher the number the darker the lead (darker the value) Powered Charcoal – used to tone paper and/or color a large area

GOALS I WILL… 1. Take, crop, and print an original photo. 2. Accurately create a grid to aid in the drawing of my portrait. 3. Transfer my image, using my grid, to my drawing paper, in correct proportions. 4. Create a full range of values and textures. 5. Take care of my materials.

Tips for Success Utilize the materials available to you. Slow and steady wins the race! Take your time with the contour of your drawing. Erase your grid after your contour drawing is completed. Pay close attention to texture and value.
