Pearl Harbor Trenton and Deep

January 1941 Japan begins communicating with other Japanese intelligence officers in Hawaii. Asking them if the attack on Pearl Harbor would be possible. The U.S. Ambassador in Japan, Joseph C. Grew, learned of this and wired Washington the information.

February 1941 Americans started to prepare to defend our American soil. Admiral Husband E. Kimmel, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Fleet, and Lieutenant General Walter C. Short, Commanding General of the Hawaiian Department prepared Hawaii for attack.

April 1941 U.S. continues to intercept and monitor Japanese secret messages.

November 1941 Tokyo sends Saburo Kurusu, an experienced diplomat to Washington as a special envoy to assist Ambassador Admiral Kichisaburo Nomura, who continued to seek a diplomatic solution. Japan wanted the U.S. to agree to its southern expansion diplomatically but if they didn’t, they would go to war. On the 16th the first units of submarines, involved in the attack departed Japan. On the 26th the main body, aircraft carriers and escorts, head to Hawaii.

December 7th, 1941 3:42 A.M. U.S. spots first Japanese submarine near the coast of Honolulu.

December 7th, 1941 First planes are noticed at 5:50 A.M. The Zoro, Kata and Val.

December 7th, 1941 Reports didn’t reach base until 38 minutes before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

December 7th, 1941 7:55 A.M. first wave drops bombs.

December 7th, 1941 8:42- 8:54 Second wave flies over and drops more bombs. Third wave is called off.

Japan Aftermath 185 killed--- 55 airmen, 121 submarine crewman, nine midget-sub crewmen. Aircraft Lost--- nine fighters; 18 dive bombers, five torpedo planes Submarines Once I-class sub destroyed; five midget subs destroyed One midget-sub crewman

American Aftermath 2,403 killed--- 2008 Navy, 218 Army, 109 Marines; 68 civilians 1,178 Wounded--- 710 Navy, 364 Army 69 Marines; 35 Civilians Battleship--- All eighty heavily damaged; three sunk, two capsized; one run around. USS Arizona converted to memorial; USS scraped all others later raised. Cruisers: Two heavily damaged; one has collateral damage Other ships: Destroyers: one sunk; two heavily damaged USS target ship sunk. Five support ships damaged. Aircraft lost: Bellows field 10; Ewa MACS, 33; Ford Island, 26; Hickam Field, 18; Kaneoche, 33; Wheeler Field, 4O; USS enterprise, Five; four B-17s destroyed

December 8th, 1941 - December, 10th 1941 December 8th, FDR gave a speech about Pearl Harbor. December 10th, Congress declares war on Japan.
