Technological Resources

Definition of Technological Resources Technology resources are more than equipment such as computer hardware. Technological resources include software, music and text. These resources are owned like physical resources and are managed the same way.

Four main areas of Technological Resources Intellectual Property Rights Software Licences Patents and Copyrights Skills and Experience

Technological Resources sheet on Moodle – Complete as we go

1. Intellectual property Intellectual property rights allow people to own ideas and have rights concerning what happens to these ideas. The five different types of intellectual property: Type Description Designs Covers features like colour, lines, materials, shape or texture. Drawings Covers drawings of a product Text Covers style and content including data written on websites Music Covers use of music for public or private performances Video Covers video clips within website and the protection against copying it.

2. Patents and Copyrights Patents and Copyright are two areas of intellectual property law. Please download the article ‘patents and copyrights’ on moodle. Describe what patents and copyrights are and how long they last.

2. Patents and Copyrights (continued) Patents are protection for inventions or new and improved products that can be made in industry. Lasts for 20 years Copyright protects the use of literary or artistic material. This includes songs, software, multimedia and films. Lasts 70 years after creators death unless it’s a sound recording etc which lasts 50 years.

3. Software licences Many businesses invest a lot of money into software and its use within the working day. Sometimes bespoke (when something is specially made for an individual or organisation) software will be designed for a business or they will use someone else’s software and pay a licence fee to use it.

3. Asda Software licences Asda leads UK retail sector with first web EDI implementation. Asda chose eCommera’s DynamicCommerce

4. Staff Skills and Experience In order to manage a businesses technological resources successfully, staff skills and experience are needed. Staff manage the day to day running of resources. Can you think of any examples?

4. Staff Skills and Experience Retaining staff means they gain more experience and skills Rewards and benefits should be given to manage them carefully Asda should not have just one employee with a specific skill. Why?

Presentation Continuation… Now complete the rest of P3 by researching and adding these slides to Asda with appropriate examples: Technological resources Intellectual property rights Protection via patents and copyrights Software licences Staff Experience and Skills

M1 - Explain how the management of human, physical and technological resources can improve the performance of Asda

M1 For M1, learners should be able to show their understanding of how resources are managed by explaining how good management of human, physical and technological resources can improve the performance of the selected organisation (Asda).

YOU NEED TO RELATE THESE POINTS TO ASDA AND NOT WRITE GENERALLY. To meet M1 you need to add slides of information for the following headings: Managing Human Resources Managing physical resources Managing Technological resources YOU NEED TO RELATE THESE POINTS TO ASDA AND NOT WRITE GENERALLY.

Managing Human Resources Having a good recruitment and selection procedure will help the business recruit the right people into the organisation. If the business can do this there is more chance that they will be successful, more efficient, satisfy customers and create more profit.

Managing Physical Resources Managing physical resources means that the buildings may well be clean and in good order. If a shop is clean and in good order more customers will want to shop there. If an office is clean and in good order the employees may well feel more motivated. A well kept building may well reduce accidents. It is also important that a business uses good materials to make their products and they are made to a good quality. If they are not, customers will complain and not buy their goods anymore.

Managing Technological Resources It is also important that businesses protect their own ideas with patents and respect other peoples copyright to avoid being sued. Having trained staff to be able to operate and maintain the right computer packages and systems is vital to a business so that it runs smoothly and customers remain satisfied.

Complete the following slides… Managing Human Resources Managing physical resources Managing Technological resources YOU NEED TO RELATE THESE POINTS TO ASDA AND NOT WRITE GENERALLY.
