Warm Up (in your composition book) Copy today's date and the objective into your comp book. In the back of your Literature book, look up the definition for SYMBOL (red pages) and copy it down into your comp book.

symbol a symbol is a person, place, object or activity that stands for something beyond itself.

For example, a flag is a colored piece of cloth that stands for a country.

A white dove is a bird that represents peace.

In your Literature book, turn to pg. 500, Gary Soto's The Jacket

Quickly review the story, and in your comp book, write down what you think the jacket symbolizes. Pull textual evidence to support your answer. symbolmeaning textual evidence the jacket

Now look at the sheet I gave you. Symb ols play a major part in Philip Pullman's novel The Golden Compass. Let's read the sheet together...

We will now read chapters together as a class. As we read, think about different symbols that we have seen in Holes. But first, let's review chapters

Chp. 40 Why is Stanley surprised to find the sack of jars and the shovel so far down the mountain? Chp. 41 Zero says, If I had just kept those old smelly sneakers, then neither of us would be here right now.” Do you think he is right? Is there anything positive about their situation? Why or why not? Explain. Chp. 42 Stanley believes it was his destiny to be hit by those falling shoes. What’s the difference between coincidence and destiny? Review questions...
