Symbolism Symbolism

Symbolism DEFINITION: a symbol is a word or object that stands for another word or object. The object or word can be seen with the eye or not visible. For example a dove stands for Peace. The dove can be seen and peace cannot.

Symbolism Assignment Write down the concrete detail/quote from the story that identifies each symbol. Then use commentary to explain what each of the following symbols means in this novel. Finally, for each symbol draw a colorful picture of the object that is the symbol.

Circle (pg. 39/ 34) CD: “Life is a circle.” Remember The Lion King?
CM: A circle represents life because a circle is never ending. When one thing ends, another begins. It is a continuous cycle. The circle can also mean unity, that everyone is working together. No one person is more important than another. Each person is needed to form the circle.

At.oow (pg. 21/ 19) CD: “At.oow is something you inherit...You are only its caretaker for a time. If you accept this at.oow from me, you must promise to care for it and someday pass it on to someone else you trust.” CM: The at.oow is a symbol of trust. Garvey gave the at.oow to Cole to show him that if he cared for it and was a man of his word, Garvey would trust Cole.
