5 Journal 19

6 Journal 20 “It was dawn now on Long Island and we went about opening the rest of the windows down-stairs, filling the house with gray-turning, gold-turning light. The shadow of a tree fell abruptly across the dew and ghostly birds began to sing among the blue leaves. There was a slow, pleasant movement in the air, scarcely a wind, promising a cool, lovely day… The night had made a sharp difference in the weather and there was an autumn flavor in the air” (Fitzgerald) As referenced in the quote above, why is the changing of the seasons from summer to fall significant given Gatsby’s current circumstances? Can you think of a time when the changing seasons brought about a change for you, either good or bad?

7 Journal 21 Choose one of the following “life lessons” learned from The Great Gatsby and explain how it is taught through the novel with textual evidence. Then, explain why this lesson is so important to learn. 1.Optimism is a noble, if futile trait. 2.Money can’t buy you love (or friends). 3.Unbridled passion isn’t always a good thing. 4.It’s not easy to leave your past behind you. 5.Don’t critique others. 6.Physical beauty is fickle and futile. 7.You know what they say about assuming…

8 Journal 22 How has reading The Great Gatsby influenced your idea of the American Dream as it is today? Specifically, do you think the “dream” is an overall good one, or do you see its flaws? Explain by providing examples, from your own experience, of either flaws or benefits of the American Dream today.
