Dare To Be King Tampa Bay Academy of Hope Weekend Retreat for Black Male Youth January Camp Blanding Stark, Florida Service to Community and Country Breakout Session

Service to Community and Country Purpose of “Rites of Passage” To pass on a Body of Knowledge from generation to generation Purpose of this session is to Acknowledge, affirm, and/or activate black males’ strengths to serve others.

Service to Community and Country “What we have seen in the last 10 years is increasing concern among successful black men in terms of trying to help other African American men succeed.” Dr. Courtland Lee Being A Black Man at the Corner of Progress and Peril

Service to Community and Country “We do big things.” President Barack Obama “The future is not a gift. It is an achievement.” Robert Kennedy

Service to Community and Country The call to serve others The Great Commission What holds you back?

Service to Community and Country State of black male youth in America The nation’s young Black males are in a state of crisis. They do not have the same opportunities as their male or female counterparts across the country. Their infant mortality rates are higher, and their access to health care is more limited. They are more likely to live in single-parent homes and less likely to participate in early childcare programs. They are less likely to be raised in a household with a fully employed adult, and they are more likely to live in poverty. As adults, Black males are less likely than their peers to be employed. At almost every juncture, the odds are stacked against these young men in ways that result in too much unfulfilled potential and too many fractured lives.

Service to Community and Country The power of breathing air – you get to grow older The power of growing older – you get to show others where to go and what to do The power of making choices – you get to determine how and where you lead others The power of leading others – it matters to this one

You can get anything you want, even success. But you'll never get it if you wait for someone to bring it to you. You have to get up and get it yourself." Shared by Rose at Café Kili

Service to Community and Country Threats to America’s security Who will “stand on the wall?” Who will cheer for those who stand on the wall? Who will make their sacrifices worth it?
