2 Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Seeks to develop research skills and assist in training of Highly Qualified Personnel by supporting students in the Social Sciences and Humanities who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergrad and early grad studies. MA SSHRC

4  the online application form, completed, printed and signed  the program of study (max. 2 pages)  a bibliography/citations (max. 5 pages)  a research contributions page (if applicable, max. 1 page)  official letter to confirm part-time study and/or leave of absence (if applicable, max. 1 page)  all undergraduate and graduate level transcripts  two (2) completed Letters of Appraisal in sealed envelopes  the Departmental Appraisal (only for candidates who must apply through a Canadian university)  the application checklist Acknowledgement of Receipt of Applications  SSHRC will acknowledge receipt of your printed and signed application form and will assign you an application number. Please cite this number in all correspondence. Complete Application:

Eligibility 5  Have Canadian citizenship  Applying to support your first full-time graduate degree  Have achieved 1 st class average in each of last 2 years of study  Have not already received an award for Master’s level study from tri-council agency  Are not pursuing a degree that combines undergrad and graduate degrees

Evaluation & Adjudication 6  Academic Excellence: 60% Transcripts, Awards, Distinctions  Research Potential: 30% Quality of analytical skills, critical thinking, originality, initiative, research contributions, letters of appraisal  Communication Skills: 10% As demonstrated in the description of the degree program, by work experience, community involvement and extracurricular activities.

Tips for Writing the Grant 7  Find a Faculty member to mentor you through this process (your thesis supervisor for example).  Write the grant in draft form first  Start Early & Edit Often

A strong application answers the questions 8  What is your research question?  Why is this idea worth doing?  Why are you the person to do it?

Things to remember  You do not need to confirm enrollment in Grad School at time of application.  Do not forget to sign and date your form.  Watch your page limits.  When SSHRC announces the results in the Spring, they’ll contact you first (in writing) and then our office. SSHRC will not release results via or phone. We do not receive advance notice of the results, but we welcome your questions or concerns.  Once you have received an MA SSHRC grant you are then eligible for a Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement, if you are interested in a research experience outside of Canada.
