When reading a good book or watching a great movie, what part do you remember the most?

A great introduction and supportive body paragraphs do not mean much when there is not a memorable conclusion.

Writing Lesson: The Argumentative Conclusion How to include a argumentative conclusion in your writing.

The purpose of a conclusion 1.To make one last effort to convince the reader 2.To suggest larger implication now that the evidence has been presented 3.To provide a satisfying sense of closure

The High Cost of High-tops But kids aren’t buying leather and plastic; they are buying a dream. The sneakers represent the success that star athletes won at an early age. It’s an unrealistic dream that distracts them from more realistic goals. And that is a very high price to pay for a pair of sneakers. Suggests larger implications!

Beef as a Health Food? You Bet Bottom line, beef is not as bad as some people claim. Eaten smartly, it’s actually good for you. So go grocery shopping with confidence, buy and eat that lean steak, and be healthier. One last effort to convince the reader!

The Heat is On (Welcome to Life in the Greenhouse) One thing is certain. Efforts to turn down the heat will have to involve the entire world if they are to succeed. “Climate change is truly a global issue,” says Trenberth, “and one that may prove to be humanity’s greatest challenge.” A satisfying sense of closure!

Conclusion STRATEGIES  Instruction: what the reader can do about the issue.  Strong statement: a punched statement, perhaps a one sentence conclusion.  Anecdote: a brief story that captures the essence of the issue  Pointed question: leaves the reader thinking about your claim and reasons  Echo: circles back to the lead(Your Claim!)

Lets look at a series of conclusions, some we have already seen. Identify the strategy used in each.

The High Cost of High-tops But kids aren’t buying leather and plastic; they are buying a dream. The sneakers represent the success that star athletes won at an early age. It’s an unrealistic dream that distracts them from more realistic goals. And that is a very high price to pay for a pair of sneakers. Strong Statement

Glory Days At Chatham’s Forth of July game, most of the fans are wash-ashores or summer visitors, but the game puts them on a longer historical continuum. They can look out on that green field and feel a kinship with those who looked out 50 or 60 years earlier and saw essentially the same thing. Baseball, in the Cape Cod League, is more than a game. It’s about family, community, and dreams. Anecdote

What is the Prize? If you are a teacher who has students who don’t like to read, give them access to good books and time to read and talk about them. Don’t assign books, and never give prizes for reading. Instruction

The Heat is On (Welcome to Life in the Greenhouse) One thing is certain. Efforts to turn down the heat will have to involve the entire world if they are to succeed. “Climate change is truly a global issue,” says Trenberth, “and one that may prove to be humanity’s greatest challenge.” Strong Statement

The Movie Theater Monopoly There aren’t many ways to make going to Hoyts cheaper, but to cut the cost, movie-goers can stick to matinees and resist buying anything to eat or drink. Waiting for a film to be released on video and renting videos are also cheaper. Hoyts would start losing their power and begin to rethink their prices. And maybe families could enjoy a Saturday night together at the movies. Wouldn’t that be a welcome change? Pointed Question

Beef as a Health Food? You Bet (Introduction) You’re in the supermarket, shopping for you dinner. You wander to the meat counter and notice that sirloin is on sale. You love beef, and you want to sink your teeth into a nice juicy steak tonight, but you’ve been told by nutritionists that it will raise your cholesterol levels. Well, put that steak in your shopping cart. There is a side of beef that isn't talked about enough – a healthy side.

Beef as a Health Food? You Bet Bottom line, beef is not as bad as some people claim. Eaten smartly, it’s actually good for you. So go grocery shopping with confidence, buy and eat that lean steak, and be healthier. Echo

Homework  Rewrite the conclusion to your argumentative draft using effective conclusion strategies learned today.  Your conclusion should:  Your conclusion should also include one conclusion strategy To make one last effort to convince the reader To suggest larger implication now that the evidence has been presented To provide a satisfying sense of closure (Instruction, strong statement, anecdote, pointed question, echo)
