Introduction Angels are a popular subject today with much speculation about what they look like, what they do, and what their role is. We have to be very careful to go back to the Bible to what has been revealed because Satan has his ministers who appear as an angel of light (Deut. 29:29; 2 Cor. 11:14-15). We are warned to not to be deceived by those who distort the Scriptures to their own destruction but grow spiritually (2 Peter 3:16-18). Let us study what the Bible says on this subject.

Angels Attributes & Nature They are created beings of God who are spiritual (Col. 1:16; Ps. 148:1-5) They are of a higher order than man who do not die (Ps. 8:3-5; Heb. 2:6-7; Luke 20:36). They always appeared as men in the Scriptures, not women or children (Gen. 18:2; 19:1; Daniel 10:13; Jude 1:9; Luke 1:19,26) Unless the Cherubim and Seraphim are angels (much speculation about it) we don’t read in the Scriptures about angels having wings. (Ezek. 11:22; Isa. 6:2)

The Purpose of Angels They worship God but are not to receive worship (Ps. 148:2; Luke 2:13; Rev. 5:11-14; 22:8-9) They are messengers of God. (Gen. 16:11; 17:19; 22:15ff; Judges 13:3ff; Luke 1:13, 31; Acts 27:23-24) They are ministering spirits. (Heb. 1:14; 1 Kings 19:5-6; Dan. 3:28; 6:22; Matt. 4:11; Luke 22:43; Acts 5:19; 12:7-10) They were guides. (Ex. 13:21-22; 23:20, 23; 32:34; Num. 20:16) Angels do God’s will but they can choose to sin (Ps. 103:20f; 2 Pt. 2:4; Jude 1:6; Re. 12:9).

There at the Resurrection and Ascension of Christ An angel rolled back the stone from the entrance to the tomb where Jesus was buried (Mt. 28:2). The guards were terrified and became like dead men when they saw him (Matt. 28:3-4). The angel told the women that Jesus was risen. (Matt. 28:5ff) Angels were at Jesus’ ascension and told the Galileans that they would see Jesus come again in the same way they saw him go into heaven (Acts 1:9-11).

After Death and at the Judgment After death, the angels carry Lazarus to Abraham’s bosom (Luke 16:22) They will separate the wicked from the righteous (Matt. 25:31-33; 13:41-42, 49-51) We will all die and face that judgment. (Heb. 9:27-28) Those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel will be punished with everlasting destruction (2 Thess. 1:7-8). Are you ready?

Conclusion The angels in heaven rejoice over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:10) But an angel is not going to tell you individually that you are saved or how to be saved. (Acts 8:26ff; 10:3ff) If any man or angel preaches another gospel they will be accursed and those who follow. (Gal. 1:8-9; Mt. 15:13-14) Obey the gospel by repenting and being baptized this morning or be restored so the angels can rejoice with you (Acts 2:38; 8:20-22).
