Introduction Mountains testify to the fact that there is a Creator of the universe. Many Scriptures speak of God’s people encountering God on the mountain top. This morning, we will learn from their mountaintop experience and how we can apply His word in our own lives.

God’s Powerful Presence When Mt. Sinai, Mt. Carmel, the Mt. of Transfiguration are mentioned what do you think of? The Powerful Presence of Almighty God! God called Moses to Mt. Sinai and they saw the evidence of His power in the lightning, thunder, and fire God called Moses to Mt. Sinai and they saw the evidence of His power in the lightning, thunder, and fire (Exodus 19:3-4; 16-20).

God’s Powerful Presence God’s voice thundered from Mt. Sinai the Ten Commandments and the people were scared to death (Exodus 20:18ff). God’s appearance was like a consuming fire on the mountain to the Israelites God’s appearance was like a consuming fire on the mountain to the Israelites (Ex. 24:17). God was testing them so that the fear of Him would stay with them so they would not sin. (Ex. 20:20)

God’s Powerful Presence When Ahab was king, the people worshiped Baal and there was a famine in Samaria. (1 Kings 18:2, 18) God had a contest on Mt. Carmel between Him and Baal in which He answered by fire after Elijah called on Him God had a contest on Mt. Carmel between Him and Baal in which He answered by fire after Elijah called on Him (1 Kgs. 18:19ff, 36-38). When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, "The LORD, He is God; the LORD, He is God" (1 Kings 18:39).

God’s Powerful Presence On the Mount where Jesus was transfigured, Peter desired to make a tabernacle for Moses, Elijah, and Jesus. God said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him” (Matthew 17:5) The miracles, wonders, and signs confirm that Jesus is the Son of God (John 20:30-31). After His resurrection, God gave Christ all authority in heaven and earth (Matt. 28:18).

God’s Punishment for Sin While God was speaking with Moses on Mt. Sinai, the Israelites worshiped the golden calf even though they had witnessed the power of God and they had promised that they would obey God’s word. (Exodus 19:8; 32:1-7) After Moses dealt with Aaron’s compromise with the sinners, about 3,000 Israelites are slain for their sin (Exodus 32:27-28; 33-35).

God’s Punishment for Sin God hates sin and always holds people accountable for their actions (Gal. 6:7-8). In the OT, the death penalty was in place for incest, bestiality, adultery, homosexuality, and many other sins (Lev. 20:10ff). If the Israelites did not obey all the words of the Law of Moses, God would send severe plagues, diseases, and sicknesses upon them (Deut. 28:58ff)

God’s Punishment for Sin But Moses interceded on behalf of the Israelites so that they weren’t all destroyed by God. (Psalms 106:23) In the same way, Jesus interceded on behalf of sinners, so that through His death on Mount Calvary, the penalty would be paid for their sins (Isaiah 53:12; Luke 23:33-34). But many do not fear God and will be punished. (Rom. 3:18; Jn. 3:19-20; 2 Th. 1:7-9)

All Men Will Pass Away Aaron died on Mount Hor and Moses would die on Mount Nebo (Deut. 32:50). The dust will return to the earth and the spirit will return to God who gave it (Eccl. 12:7). God allowed Moses to see all of the promised land from Pisgah (Deut. 34:1-4).

Conclusion As we consider these mountain top experiences, we need to realize God’s power in His word (Isaiah 55:8-9; Hebrews 4:12-13) God will punish all sinners with eternal fire who reject Him (John 12:48; Rev. 21:8). But you can be forgiven of your sins by repenting and being baptized (Acts 2:38). Do not neglect this salvation by refusing Him who warns from heaven (Heb. 2:3; 12:25f)!
